RESUMO

The occurrence of illnesses and mortality among newborns is an important public health problem and results from the interaction of multiple factors that begin prior to the pregnancy itself. Among sources of information on morbidity, studies on hospitalization enable the gathering of knowledge on the living conditions of the population and an assessment of healthcare services. The present dissertation is composed of a literature review and an original article aiming to understand the factors that contribute toward the hospitalization of newborns. For the literature review, articles on determinant factors for the hospitalization of children were researched in the Medline, Scielo and Lilacs database using the following key words: hospitalization, emergency, hospitalization determinants, child, newborn, morbidity. Factors such as adverse socioeconomic conditions, especially family income, parentsâ level of schooling, motherâs age, low birth weight, poor quality of care offered to the mother during pregnancy and birth, and the failure to establish breastfeeding, are associated to the occurrence of illnesses in the neonatal period. For the original article, a cross-sectional study with an analytical component was carried out, with the aim of assessing the frequency of hospitalization among newborns from low-income families attended at the emergency unit of the Mother and Child Health Institute Professor Fernando Figueira and to identify possible determinants for hospitalization. There was a high frequency of hospitalization among children who lived under the worst socioeconomic conditions; those born with low weights; those who were not receiving motherâs milk exclusively; and those whose mothers had received inadequate prenatal and neonatal care. Studies on the causes of hospitalization are important to broadening knowledge on factors associated to morbidity in the neonatal period and can contribute toward the planning of health promotion actions
