RESUMO

ABSTRACT This paper sought to comprehend the matter of the activities in the quotidian of a residential home for elderly in a city of São Paulo State. Its objective was to examine the reality of the residents daily life and how it can interfere in their activities. The case study showed pertinence as methodological proposal. A structured interview applied to 5 subjects (managers and staff) was utilized as a tool for collecting data, as well as field observation and students reports. Other material such as documents of the institution and old newspapers gave referential support. The data were categorized and analyzed simultaneously and compared to the existing literature. It was observed that the institution still keeps some characteristics of its foundation, such as its main activity of raising funds through charity. Therefore, the residents activities are only valued when they are made into income. The relief practices, also supported by the society, causes the residents to be seen as underdog, incapable and unproductive, designating them idle. The residential environment brings along the sensation of abandon, sadness and apathy. Voluntary work is done in an individualized way and although there is a team of professionals from different areas, there is neither coordination nor integrated work. The residents are not questioned about their interests in the proposed activities and there is not a schedule to inform them of the programming of the month, leading them to a state of total alienation and temporal disorientation. These issues led to discoveries about the factors which interfere in the residents doing activities: waiting for the death, no investment in life, absence of projects to make life meaningful; staff and managers lacking knowledge about elderly and the process of becoming elder; rules that hinder flexibility and freedom, items necessary to the residents healthy life; job rotation and its consequences professional inexperience, constant interruptions in the tasks and disorganization in the activities of the institution -; lack of autonomy, leading to the residents isolation, moral depreciation and no production; environments and materials, for being linked to issues like independency, safety, risk, comfort and performance limit; scheduled routine for daily activities drag them into depersonalization, loss of dignity and respect; and feeling of not belonging, since belonging brings the assurance of knowing the space accurately, encouraging the will of preserving and improving it, providing activity. Knowing these factors means having concepts to develop meaningful quotidian activities at residential homes for elderly.
