RESUMO

The morphophysiology related to volatile fatty acids (VFA) absorption throughout the gastrointestinal tract of ruminants is not totally characterized. The elucidation of VFA behavior in all production and absorption sites can contribute to the adoption of nutritional strategies aiming to maximize food utilization and to reduce the occurrence of digestive disturbances in ruminants. The aim of this work was to measure the extent of the abomasum and cecum-colon absorptive surface and determine the mitotic index (MI). Ten adult crossbred bovines had their stomach and large intestine removed after slaughter. The total area of the absorptive surface was measured through image capture and analysis. Histological sections were done to measure cellular proliferation, through the MI. The abomasum absorptive surface (0.58 m2) was lower (P <0.01) than that of the rumen (6.53 m2) and omasum (2.31m2). The spiral folds region of the abomasum represented 91 % (0.53 m2) of the abomasum absorptive surface and the weight (g) of the mucosa + sub mucosa of this region presented positive and high correlation (r2 = 0.94) with the abomasum absorptive surface. The cecum-colon absorptive surface (0.23 m2) corresponded to 3.5% of that of the rumen and 10 % of that of the omasum. Cecum and ascending colon proximal loop presented a surface of 0.11m2 and 0.12 m2; respectively. The cecum-colon has a high capacity to produce metabolizable energy in its absorptive surface. The MI among different studied segments were different and the values observed were 0.48 %; 0.14 %; 0.36 % and 0.41 % for the spiral folds, pyloric, cecum and ascending colon proximal loop regions, respectively. Positive correlation was observed between tissue mass and absorptive surface of the abomasum. It allowed to establish regressions to facilitate the measuring of abomasum and cecum-colon absorptive surface.
