RESUMO

The aim of the present study was to observe how exposition of the pregnant rats to the electromagnetic field (EMF) at 60Hz, 3μT for 2 hours per day, during twenty one days and/or using the Regional Basic Diet (RBD) influenced the regulation of the hormonal and metabolic concentrations in pregnant rats, and their influence on the reflex and somatic maturation in offspring. Four groups were formed: two groups casein (A and B) whose diet contained 18% of protein and two groups RBD (C and D), which were fed a diet with 8% of protein, exposed or not to the EMF. The diet manipulation occurred during the pregnancy. The hormonal (insulin, cortisol, T3 and T4) and metabolic concentrations (glucose) were assessed in the serum. The following reflexes were daily assessed (between 12:00 and 14:00 h): Palma Grasp (PG), Righting Reflex (RF), Cliff Avoidance (CA), Vibrissae Placing (VP), Negative Geotaxis (NG), Auditory Startle (AS) and Free-Fall Righting (FFR) and also the somatic maturation indexes: Eye Opening (EO), Auricle Opening (AO), Auditory Canal Opening (ACO), Low Incisor Eruption (LIE) and Upper Incisor Eruption (UIE). The results of the metabolic and hormonal serum concentrations were: Group D presented a glucose serum concentration 113.09% greater that of Group C. Group C presented lower insulin and cortisol levels (77.5% and 54.67%) than those of Group A. The T3 serum concentration, presented figures lower than the control Group A, i.e. 71.43% for Group B, 91.16% for Group C, and 97.28% for Group D. When comparing Group C with Group B, the difference presented was 69.05%. The T4 serum concentrations, were 37.88%, 74% and 51.38% in the groups B, C and D, respectively. It presented a difference of 58.16% in the Group C in relation to Group B. The association between EMF and a deficient diet caused a delay in the appearance or disappearance of the reflexes RF, CA, VP, NG, AS, FFR and PG when compared with Group A (fed casein). When the diets were compared, both exposed to EMF (D and B), the delay occurred in the RF, VP, NG and CA. And in the Groups C and A, the effect was observed in RF, CA, VP, NG, AS and PG. In relation to the EMF, the Group B differed from Group A in CA, AS, FFR and PG and the Group D differed from C in the PG reflex. In the somatic indexes Group D showed delay in relation to Group A in the EO, AO, ACO, LIE and UIE reflexes. When Groups D and B (RBD and casein) where compared the delay happened in AO and EO. In conclusion, the association between EMF and undernutrition caused a decrease in the T3 and T4 serum concentration of pregnant rats and a delay in the reflex and somatic maturation of the offspring
