RESUMO

The study discusses the interaction between learners and teacher in the classroom of a public school in Brazil. Among the many issues involved in the teaching of a public school, the study focuses on the theoretical and practical issues related to the student-teacher interaction, questioning if it is possible in such a specific situation to organize a community of practices based on a dialogic interaction as defined by the Circle of Bakhtin. The study, therefore, undertakes the critical issue of the renormalizations which are a frequent practice of classroom pedagogy because planning can never foresee all the singularities of a community of practices, particularly a community of learning. The study, therefore, aims at developing the following general objective: to investigate whether it is possible to introduce in the elementary public school a methodology which has as its main objective to organize a classroom in which teachers and pupils interact in a dialogic manner for the purpose of learning. To implement such a project, the study first discusses the complex notions of teacher and student, the notion of language and defines classroom, as presented in the Brazilian educational literature. The analysis of the data is based on: 1) eight classroom texts (the interaction between teacher and students) taped and transcribed, and 2) on a lengthy interview with the teacher about her classroom activities and educational believes. The data analysis and discussion show a genuine intention and effort from the teacher to organize her classroom in a dialogic manner. However, the results of such an effort are a classroom discourse similar to a chorus collective response of students to the teachers questions and teaching. The study also shows a teacher committed to her students, continuously trying to organize them as a community of learning, however, in spite of all the renormalizations, the best response the teacher can get from her students is a chorus response
