RESUMO

This study examines the relationship between innovation, organizational environment and performance as perceived by managers of companies located in business incubators. To answer the research problem, and the proposals of this study, we opted to use a quantitative survey, and a descriptive approach in relation to its purpose. Data were collected by means of an electronic questionnaire, sent via email to several managers and incubated companies, based on the list of incubators on the website of ReCEPET the Santa Catarina Network of Organizations that Promote Technological ventures. Of the total study population, 88 questionnaires were filled out correctly, representing 36.32% of the incubated companies that took part in the study. The results showed that for 39.77% of the managers, the environment is seen as static and simple, for 29.55% see the environment as dynamic and complex, 22.73% consider it static and complex, and only 7.95% of the managers consider the environment dynamic and simple. Regarding the adoption of innovation, it was possible to define 4 groups of companies (g1, g2, g3 and g4), which had homogeneous characteristics with regard to innovation. The groups were classified as innovative, slightly innovative, very innovative and hardly innovative at all, respectively, according to Damanpour‟s theoretical approach (1991). Of the six performance variables of this study (sales of products and services, retaining customers, attracting new customers, teamwork, profitability, and overall performance), it was observed that four of them (sales of products and services, retaining customers, profitability, and overall performance) improved by more than 41% after the company joined the incubator, and in the variables profitability and overall performance, 62% of managers saw an improvement in the results of more than 60%. Based on these data, it can be concluded that there is a correlation between the perception of the environment and performance, and also between innovation and performance. But no correlation was found, in relation to influence of environment, in the relationship between innovation and performance
