RESUMO

The present work is a study of the constitution of the adolescentâs identity and its relationship with the practice of capoeira. It analyzes how capoeira plays a role in the adolescentâs identity constitution while he or she undergoes a moment of crisis during the transition from child identity to adult identity. The framework for understanding this crisis was Erik Eriksonâs theory of Psychosocial Development. The study presents a historical view of the concept of adolescence: its description, relationship with the identity crisis and with the adolescentâs group, culture, peers and cultural identity. Furthermore, the study undertakes an explanation of capoeiraâs universe, how it can be understood as a culture and how the capoeira ethos is structured. A survey was realized among adolescentes, who practice capoeira, with the intend of verifying their point of view about how and if capoeria influence their lives. The data obtained indicates the importance of family and friends in the construction of the adolescentâs values and beliefs, as well as in his or her projects for the future. It also indicates that capoeira may play an important role in identity constitution and underlines the role of the teacher selecting precisely which among several capoeira values are to be assimilated by students.
