RESUMO
In this thesis we present a study of the opera "Abul", composed by the Brazilian composer Alberto Nepomuceno, analyzing its insertion in the universe of Brazilian musical nationalism during the period of the First Republic. To do so, we investigated the history of the composition and production of the work in Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil and Italy, and its reception by the press and public. To evaluate the criticism related to the successfulness or unsuccessfulness of the opera s performances, we looked into its dramaturgical and musical aspects (motivic structure and vocal line). A CD-Rom containing documents related to the opera and its composer is inc1uded
