RESUMO
This study investigated the Brazilian scientific formation through the PISA 2006 data. PISA - Programme for International Student Assessment - is a program of international comparative assessment applied to a sample of 15 years old students. The adequate teaching of science stimulates curiosity and logical reasoning, helps to form better able citizens to meet the challenges of contemporary society and strengthens democracy, giving the population in general, better conditions to participate in even more common debates on scientific topics that affect our daily lives. Based on the importance and relevance of discussing the Brazilian scientific formation and making use of data from PISA 2006, this research attempted to answer to three questions: (a) what is the perception of Brazilian students participating in PISA 2006 on science? (B) how is Brazil located in the international context with regard to scientific skills prioritized by this assessment? (C) which students characteristics are associated with their Science test results in the PISA 2006? For the study, we have conducted our analyzes based on two main logic: description (univariate and bivariate statistics) and explanation (test of linear regression models). The results indicate that Brazilian students have a relative interest in science, however they show a rather stereotypical view of that and seem not to associate it with themselves. Apparently, science is related to phenomena that are beyond comprehension and configures itself into something abstract that is not directly linked to Brazilian students. They indicate the school as the main source of learning topics related to science, but the school does not seem to convert the potential interest of students in Science into scientific literacy. Brazil occupies the 52th position among the 57 participating countries and is allocated at the lowest level of performance in PISA 2006. Among the main factors that significantly impact the results of Brazilian students in that program are Education Network, Grade Repetition, Socioeconomic Level and Parental Education Level.
