RESUMO

This thesis aims to elaborate a function of educational production for 15 aged students evaluated by PISA 2006, using their grades on Science test. The selected sample is composed by students from the following countries: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Spain, USA, Finland, Mexico, Portugal and Uruguay. Some countries from Latin America were selected due to their similarities with Brazil, concerning economic and cultural aspects. Spain and Portugal were selected because they were the colonizers of Brazil. USA is part of the sample due to its huge educational system and its heterogeneous population, which is similar to Brazil. Finally, Finland was chosen because this was the country with the highest grade in PISA 2006. This thesis also intends to determinate what are the factors that influence positively and negatively in the education proccess. In order to access that, some variables were evaluated such as: outside exam to evaluate the students, autonomy of school in firing teachers, selection process using historical school of the students, presence of a council to advise and guide students, and the ratio between computers and number of students. In order to compose the regression some data about familiar background, motivation and the learning easiness of the individual, besides some other characteristics of the school, were used to minimize the bias due to omitted variables. The results indicate that the presence of a council to guide the students, the ratio between computers and students, the selection proccess to enter the school and the autonomy within the school to fire teachers have a positive influence on students grades
