RESUMO

The objective of this study is to investigate the meaning of teaching in contemporary state-maintained school. It is characterized by a theoretical investigation complemented by empirical data gathered through new schoolteachers who teach 11 to 14 years olds in public schools in Osasco (a city in São Paulo State) and nearby towns. This thesis considers the work done by teachers as a social phenomenon which is historically determined and as such it advocates changes at both teachers training and in-service courses that would take on board critical education theories.
