RESUMO

The aim of this research is to analyze the educational perspective within the administration of Manoel Rodrigues Calheiros, the first Communist mayor of Brazil, in the period between 1947 and 1951 in the city of JaboatÃo dos Guararapes. It is hoped, in this way, that the history of education in our region is captured,.perceiving this as a reflection within the greater panorama of national character. In a rural and conservative society, this administration undoubtedly made a great impact. It is pertinent to ask how a representative of leftist thought conducted city direction in various aspects, mainly that of the educational system. The bibliography and documentation analyzed led to interesting conclusions. Cultural education, the established economic model and legislation were perceived to be main factors that determine educational reality. In order to realize this research, different primary sources were used; however, priority was given to the official discourse reflected in Manoel Calheiros educational plans for the city and his governmental discourse. In the latter, legislation occupies an important role, since it is through this medium that public powers establish the norms of educational organization. This research was guided methodologically by New History, as this methodology provides the possibility of using new sources, offering a truly interdisciplinary construction that seeks to analyze the many histories that can be written about education in the state of Pernambuco in this turbulent period
