RESUMO

The dissertation in hand has as its aim understanding how the construction of the cultural identity of the teacher in Campo Grande during the military regime came about and is within the Research Area of Cultural Diversity and Indigenous Education. It is inspired by cultural studies and theory according to which identities are formed culturally over time by different discourses which are heard in different contexts. However, identities are not natural, essential, nor fixed or ready. The specific aims were; a) From stories told, verify the elements that most contributed to the cultural identity of the teachers; b) Identify the forms of control exercised over the teachers in the classroom; c) Identify what types of information they received (books, newspapers, magazines); d) Investigate the types of social and political places that were frequented by teachers; e) Analyze the perception of the teachers at the time of the military regime as to movements that opposed the regime. The method used was that of semi-structured interviews where educators tell stories of their lives which refer to a period of their trajectories. Six teachers were interviewed with the obligation of maintaining the interviews anonymous. They were chosen for having taught in middle school (the former second grade) from 1964 to 1985, in the area of humanities and that in one way or another, felt themselves harassed by the military regime. As to results, it is possible to point out some impressions in the interviewees produced by the repressive context, which are in the ever present fear, dribbling the censor (and censors) including those at home, in the clandestine meetings, in the sensation of being watched (also in the classroom), in the reading of marginal newspapers, in tuning in to radios to hear overseas broadcasts, that constructed ways of being and living (identities), articulated with interests (collective and individual) and with the necessity of living with a situation which was against them. As well as this, it is possible to affirm also that the construction of the identity of the teacher came about also through resistance, mainly with the aim of gaining ground for the teaching category or for a certain political party, or even, for ethical and moral feelings for society.
