RESUMO
This paper consists of a study of language acquisition by a pre-linguistic deafblind child in a social-cognitive interactionist perspective. Pre-linguistic deafblindness sets in before the deaf-blind person acquires a language, be it oral or signs. In the context of deaf-blindness, learning becomes a complex endeavor, and we do not have a model to explain all the phenomena, or to understand and support most investigations carried out in the subject. Learning in this study thus shows the dialogic of innate and acquired systems, of systems which are updated in the light of experience, that is, depending upon the environment, mediatization and specialized systems for various ends. Therefore, as in any given psychological phenomenon, learning by a pre-linguistic deaf-blind child can only be understood from a multifactorial genesis, caused by biological, environmental and psychosocial factors. This position has proven essential to the understanding of the process of language acquisition by J., given that, due to Js lack of eyesight and hearing; it takes place in totally atypical conditions. For this reason, we will consider the theories with different weights, for we are taking into account the moment when the factor under discussion is occurring within the process, and using a dynamic conception of the learning potential and the development of this deafblind child. The study of deafblinds children leads to the knowledge of variations in the pattern of development, since this can occur in different circumstances, and therefore raises questions regarding the direction and character of the educational and therapeutic interventions and it is important for those concerned with the provision of necessary special services, both as educational development.
