1. Fruit set and yield of apple trees cv. Gala treated with seaweed extract of ascophyllum nodosum and thidiazuron

2. The necessity of management in a lake of the Atlantic Forest biodiversity hotspot: nitrogen levels connected to a persistent bloom of Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii
ABSTRACT Conservational studies of the threatened Atlantic Forest biome are frequently restricted to terrestrial ecosystems. We know little about the water bodies, specially considering that this biome covers the third largest system of lakes in Brazil. Some of these lakes are located inside the protected "Rio Doce State Park", but many others are found outs

3. Efeitos deletérios de microcistina em matrinxã (Brycon cephalus) e tilápia nilótica (Oreochromis niloticus). / Deleterious effects of microcystin on matrinxã (Bryan cephalus) and Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus)
The aim of this study was to evaluate the water quality in fish earthpond with blooms of cyanobacterias and acute toxicity (DL50 - 24 hs) of microcystin in species (Brycon cephalus) and tilapia nilotica (Oreochromis niloticus) as well as histological changes in gills, kidney and liver in fish. Water quality monitoring was carryed out in a pisciculture in Esp

4. Pré-cloração associada à adsorção em carvão ativado em pó e flotação por ar dissolvido na remoção de microcistina presente em três diferentes concentrações em águas provenientes de reservatório eutrofizado / Prechlorination associated to adsorption with powdered activated carbon and dissolved air flotation in the removal of three concentrations of microcystin present in eutroficated reservoir water
The disordered growth of cities, the use of planting areas near the water sources and the launch of domestic and industrial wastewater without treatment are the main sources of water bodiespollution. Such pollution contributes to increase the nutrient loading in the water bodies. In association with climatic factors, this enrichment of nutrient provides suit

Toxicidade em camundongos devido à exposição prolongada a uma floração de cianobactérias contendo microcistinas: avaliações comportamental, hematológica, bioquímica e anatomopatológica / Toxicity in mice due to prolonged exposure to a cyanobacterial bloom containing microcystins: behavioral, hematological, biochemical and anatomopathological evaluations
Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) are prokaryotic and photosynthetic organisms found in practically every type of liquid habitat and that can form great superficial masses of intense green color called blooms. The development of algal blooms on water surface occurs with a higher incidence and is recognised as being a potential health hazard due to the toxic n

6. Algas nocivas e ficotoxinas no Parque Aqüícola de São Francisco do Sul
The aquaculture is an important source of food, highly nutritive and a great job source. Nowadays it is one of the economic sectors of great growth, with an annual rate above 10%. One of the impediments for the full development this activity are the red tides incidence, better defined as harmful algal bloom (HAB), which do not always show the reddish colorat

The trophic levei and the water quality of the "Lagoa do Taquaral" a pond in Campinas S. P. -Brazil, were evaluated using the TSI -Calrson (CARLSON, 1977) and IQA -CETESB (CETESB, 1996) indexes. The pond was characterized as eutrophic. The water quality entering the pond ranged from bad to good. At the central part of the pond and the emuent water, both pres

9. Isolation and properties of fungi that lyse blue-green algae.
Of 70 pure microbial cultures isolated from aquatic habitats, soil, and air according to the ability to lyse live blue-green algae, 62 were fungi representing the genera Acremonium, Emericellopsis, and Verticillium. Algal-lysing fungi were isolated from all habitat types sampled. The remaining isolates comprised four bacteria and four streptomycetes. All iso

10. Viruses as Partners in Spring Bloom Microbial Trophodynamics
Population sizes of algae, bacteria, heterotrophic flagellates, and viruses were observed through the 1989 spring diatom bloom in Raunefjorden in western Norway. The culmination of the diatom bloom was followed by a peak in the concentration of bacteria and an increase in the concentration of heterotrophic flagellates, a pattern consistent with the concept o

11. Molecular and Physiological Responses of Two Classes of Marine Chromophytic Phytoplankton (Diatoms and Prymnesiophytes) during the Development of Nutrient-Stimulated Blooms
Generic taxon-specific DNA probes that target an internal region of the gene (rbcL) encoding the large subunit of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RubisCO) were developed for two groups of marine phytoplankton (diatoms and prymnesiophytes). The specificity and utility of the probes were evaluated in the laboratory and also during a 1-month me

12. Adaptation to High-Intensity, Low-Wavelength Light among Surface Blooms of the Cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa
Natural populations of the nuisance bloom cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa obtained from the eutrophic Neuse River, N.C., revealed optimal chlorophyll a-normalized photosynthetic rates and resistance to photoinhibition at surface photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) intensities. At saturating PAR levels these populations exhibited higher photosynth
