RESUMO

The aquaculture is an important source of food, highly nutritive and a great job source. Nowadays it is one of the economic sectors of great growth, with an annual rate above 10%. One of the impediments for the full development this activity are the red tides incidence, better defined as harmful algal bloom (HAB), which do not always show the reddish colorations, as it could be greenish, yellowish, or simply colorless. HAB has been increasing in importance and intensity, in respect of economic losses for the mariculture productive chain, mainly by the shellfish accumulation of phycotoxins, produced by algae. This process, which turns the mussel improper for consumption, is difficult to forecast, it can happen either in developed or developing countries. Shellfish consumption poisoned by phycotoxins can cause syndromes, such as: paralytic shellfish poisons - PSP, diarrhetic shellfish poisons - DSP and amnesic shellfish poisons ASP. In Brazil, PSP and DSP have been found in culture area. In São Francisco do Sul-SC, in southern Brazil, aquiculture, its already part of the economy in the county, bringing great benefit to the traditional fisherman community. From this premise, a monitoring was carried through in the park for 14 months, from October 2004 to November 2005, with samples every 15 days, and mouse bioassay was made from mussel tissues for PSP and DSP. Other environmental variables, such as salinity, temperature, inorganic nutrients and chlorophyll a were also accessed. In September of 2005, an occurrence of Dinophysis acuminata caused contamination of mussels for about 15 days. This was the only case of contamination observed during this monitoring. Because of the importance of this activity, a management plan elaboration and mariculture monitoring are necessary, with the participation of every actor involved, looking forward to protect human health, credibility in its activity, and subsidize the elaboration of maricultura disciplinarians rules
