RESUMO

The trophic levei and the water quality of the "Lagoa do Taquaral" a pond in Campinas S. P. -Brazil, were evaluated using the TSI -Calrson (CARLSON, 1977) and IQA -CETESB (CETESB, 1996) indexes. The pond was characterized as eutrophic. The water quality entering the pond ranged from bad to good. At the central part of the pond and the emuent water, both presented good quality. In previous work, the pond had been characterized as hypereutrophic (MATSUMURA-TUNDISI, et ai., 1986) presenting cyanophyceae algae, mainly from the Mycrocystis aeruginosa specie, absence of zooplankton and only one fish specie. On the other hand, this study pointed out a diversity of algae species, absence of algal bloom, presence of zooplankton and various fish species. In the second phase of this work, the sediment was characterized physically and chemically. Also a mathematical model for the phosphorus adsorption in the sediment was proposed. This experiment was carried out in aerobic and anaerobic conditions, in the presence and absence of light. The sediment has shown better afinity by the phosphorus element at aerobic conditions, wich agrees with CERCO (1989), FURUMAI e OHGAKI (1989) and RYDIN (1996) observations
