13. Vitreous pharmacokinetics and electroretinographic findings after intravitreal injection of acyclovir in rabbits
OBJECTIVES: Acute retinal necrosis is a rapidly progressive and devastating viral retinitis caused by the herpesvirus family. Systemic acyclovir is the treatment of choice; however, the progression of retinal lesions ceases approximately 2 days after treatment initiation. An intravitreal injection of acyclovir may be used an adjuvant therapy during the first

14. Caulerpin as a potential antiviral drug against herpes simplex virus type 1
About 80% of the human adult population is infected with HSV-1. Although there are many anti-HSV-1 drugs available (acyclovir, ganciclovir, valaciclovir, foscarnet), their continuous use promotes the selection of resistant strains, mainly in ACV patients. In addition to resistance, the drugs also have toxicity, particularly when administration is prolonged.

15. Marine natural seaweed products as potential antiviral drugs against Bovine viral diarrhea virus
Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) is an etiologic agent that causes important economic losses in the world. It is endemic in cattle herds in most parts of the world. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the in vitro cytotoxic effect and antiviral properties of several marine natural products obtained from seaweeds: the indole alkaloid caulerpin (CAV, 1

16. Antiviral activity of extracts from Brazilian seaweeds against herpes simplex virus
Organic extracts of 36 species of marine algae (sixteen species of Rhodophyta, eight species of Ochrophyta and twelve species of Chlorophyta) from seven locations on the Brazilian coast were evaluated for their anti-HSV-1 and anti-HSV-2 activity resistant to Acyclovir (ACV). Activity tests in crude extracts, followed by the identification of the major compou

17. Anti-HSV activity of Hypnea musciformis cultured with different phytohormones
Four extracts from the seaweed Hypnea musciformis (Wulfen in Jacq.) J.V. Lamour. (Rhodophyta), collected directly from its natural habitat or cultivated in the presence of phytohormones, were evaluated for their ability to inhibit the replication of acyclovir-resistant herpes simplex viruses types 1 (HSV-1) and 2 (HSV-2) strains. The main purpose was to dete

18. Derivative spectrophotometric method for determination of acyclovir in polymeric nanoparticles
A derivative spectrophotometric method was validated for quantification of acyclovir in poly (n-butylcyanoacrylate) (PBCA) nanoparticles. Specificity, linearity, precision, accuracy, recovery, detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) limits were established for method validation. First-derivative at 295.2 nm eliminated interferences from nanoparticle ingredi

19. Antiviral activity of the Lippia graveolens (Mexican oregano) essential oil and its main compound carvacrol against human and animal viruses
Mexican oregano (Lippia graveolens) is a plant found in Mexico and Central America that is traditionally used as a medicinal herb. In the present study, we investigated the antiviral activity of the essential oil of Mexican oregano and its major component, carvacrol, against different human and animal viruses. The MTT test (3-4,5-dimethythiazol-2yl)-2,5-diph

20. Formulation and evaluation of mucoadhesive buccal patch of acyclovir utilizing inclusion phenomenon

21. An HPLC-UV method for the measurement of permeability of marker drugs in the Caco-2 cell assay
The Caco-2 cell line has been used as a model to predict the in vitro permeability of the human intestinal barrier. The predictive potential of the assay relies on an appropriate in-house validation of the method. The objective of the present study was to develop a single HPLC-UV method for the identification and quantitation of marker drugs and to determine

22. Desenvolvimento e validação de um método analítico simples e rápido por espectroscopia UV para quantificação de aciclovir em matrizes hidrofílicas de liberação prolongada
This work reports the validation of an analytical UV spectrophotometric method to assay acyclovir in hydrophilic matrices (assay and dissolution studies). The method was linear in the range between 2.5-20 µg mL-1, presenting a good correlation coefficient ( r = 0,9999). Precision and accuracy analysis showed low relative standart deviation (< 2.0 %) and a g

Aspects of bovine herpesvirus 5 (BoHV-5) pathogenesis and experimental therapies against BoHV-1 and BoHV-5 were investigated in vitro and in inoculated rabbits. In chapter 1, we investigated the role of nitric oxide (NO), a component of innate immunity against pathogens, in the neurological disease by BoHV-5 in rabbits. Spectrophotometry for NO products reve
