RESUMO

This work aims at investigating the characteristics of the internalization process in companies of the Northeast Brazil. The theoretic reference uses a transversal method to analyse the main key concepts of the internationalization theories: life cicle, Uppsala, Adaptive Choice, Eclectic Paradigm, Diamond Model and RBV. The key concepts include localization, managerial choices, tangible and intangible resources, learning and external agents. The case presents common aspects of strategy concepts and internationalization leading to the construction of a framework. The data was collected at the companies: âNetuno Alimentos S/A â eâ Queiroz Galvao Alimentos S/Aâ, bearing in mind the longitudinal character of the research. The Adaptive Theory was used as a basis for the methodological procedures. Data analysis was carried out in two stages: A descriptve part and a analytic one, for which the Constant Comparison Method was used, with the help of Atlas/ti software. The cases present common aspects along the process which leads o the construction of a framework, this being the most important contribution of this thesis. It shows that no dominant model alone explains the internationalization process. As the main results, we noted that the strategy formation process tends to be gradual and that the external context was the main determinant factor for market orientation and structure. Furthermore, I concluded that the intangible resources can replace the tangible ones in the internationalization process. In the beginning we notice the influence of leaning based on a try and error approach, but that gradually evolves to more structured forms of learning. We identified that the first exports were moved by the existence of comparative advantages, which lead to a trend. The industry cooperation agents helped to spread their know-how in the initial phases, whereas the opportunistic ones moved towards a greater compromise with the internationalization.
