RESUMO

The purpose of this study is to analyze metaphorical headings used by five musical instrument teachers, and their relations to themes of instrumental teaching. The study is justified by the needs to better understand this picturesque aspect of the discourse from these instrument teachers. In order to know how these metaphorical elaboration are used we have divided this central question into four more specific sub questions which are: 1) to find the metaphors relations with aspects of musical execution and interpretation, 2) to identify, whether this was the case, relapses into the samples, 3) to identify, if possible, themes or even more prone subjects used through metaphors and 4) to find out the to appropriated criteria of assessment and so to assess the quality of metaphors. Initially existing metaphor theories have been researched from the early theories known until the twentieth century theories, especially the last third of this century. The more recent theories go beyond the traditional metaphor conception which sees the metaphor as substitutive ornaments with poetic or rhetorical functions. They consider metaphors essential to form knowledge. The data was carried out by semi structured thematic interviews in which teachers teaching instrument class were motivated to quote the example of metaphors created or learned, as well as, to speak about other aspects of their instrument and their the teaching methodology. Through crossing samples selected on the interviews with theoretical support it was possible to increase the comprehension phenomenon to find some answers for the question early proposed. Some results point to a tendency to use metaphors to speak about sounding quality of the sound itself and the means of it production. Other results point to a tendency to evoke physical sensations or even feelings and state of mind through metaphorical headings. We believe that great quality metaphors can be powerful tools to understand the reality and consequently, knowing how to formulate them its a competence to be developed by teachers who teach the art of playing a musical instrument.
