13. Prions: the danger of biochemical weapons
The knowledge of biotechnology increases the risk of using biochemical weapons for mass destruction. Prions are unprecedented infectious pathogens that cause a group of fatal neurodegenerative diseases by a novel mechanism. They are transmissible particles that are devoid of nucleic acid. Due to their singular characteristics, Prions emerge as potential dang

14. Characterisation of divergent flavivirus NS3 and NS5 protein sequences detected in Rhipicephalus microplus ticks from Brazil
Transcripts similar to those that encode the nonstructural (NS) proteins NS3 and NS5 from flaviviruses were found in a salivary gland (SG) complementary DNA (cDNA) library from the cattle tick Rhipicephalus microplus.Tick extracts were cultured with cells to enable the isolation of viruses capable of replicating in cultured invertebrate and vertebrate cells.

15. Proximate and mineral composition of industrialized biscuits
The aim of this study was to analyze the proximate and mineral composition of 21 types of biscuits. All biscuits showed high fat contents, significantly different (P < 0.05) from those described on the labels, except for three brands. Insoluble fiber fractions were predominant in the analyzed samples. Among the 21 biscuits analyzed, 16 showed food label valu

16. Identification and characterization of viroids in 'Navelina ISA 315' sweet orange
To date, seven species of viroids have been described infecting Citrus. However, only Citrus exocortis viroid (CEVd), Hop stunt viroid (HSVd) and Citrus dwarfing viroid (CDVd) have been reported in this crop in Brazil. The aim of our work was to identify and characterize viroids infecting plants of 'Navelina ISA 315' sweet orange cultivar grafted on 'Rangpur

17. Genetic similarity of Burkholderia cenocepacia from cystic fibrosis patients
Burkholderia cenocepacia may cause serious infections in patients with cystic fibrosis, and this microorganism can be highly transmissible. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis is widely used to study the dynamics of strain spread in cystic fibrosis patients. The aim of this work was to perform pulsed-field gel electrophoresis-based molecular typing of B. cenoce

19. Remodelamento do tumor venéreo transmissível / Remodeling of the canine transmissible venereal tumor during treatment with vincristine sulfate

20. Consumo de cálcio por adolescentes de escolas públicas (municipais e estaduais) e privadas do município de Chapecó-SC / Calcium consumption by adolescent from public and private schools from Chapecó city
Bone mineral density in adulthood, an important component of bone strength depends on peak bone mass acquired by the end of the second decade of life. About 40% of bone mass is accumulated between 11 and 14 years in girls and between 13 and 17 years in boys. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the average daily intake of calcium in adolescents f

21. Seroepidemiological survey of transmissible infectious diseases in a portuguese prison establishment
A cross-sectional study was conducted in 151 (71.6%) of 211 male inmates of a regional Portuguese prison in order to establish the seroprevalence for viral hepatitis (HAV, HBV, HCV), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), syphilis and herpes simplex virus (HSV-1 and HSV-2) and to analyze some psychosocial and criminal characteristics. Mean age was 34 years. Ant

22. Comparison of the worldwide transmissible pseudomonas aeruginosa with isolates from brazilian cystic fibrosis patients
Cross-infection with Pseudomonas aeruginosa among cystic fibrosis (CF) patients is a rare occurrence. However, the emergence of transmissible strains has been reported between unrelated individuals. We analyzed the genetic relationship among P. aeruginosa isolates from Brazilian CF patients and transmissible clones which are worldwide spread. The data does n

24. Interação entre sistemas agroindustriais, modelos alimentares e saúde da população : estudo aplicado ao arroz
The Western dietary pattern is characterized by the consumption of practical food and fast preparation, but that contains a high energy density, much sodium and little food fiber, which takes to non-transmissible chronic diseases. In the search for the confrontation of this problem, a new food model which tries to conjugate practical with health benefits com
