2. Síntese do leste e oeste: uma análise dos eixos simétricos no terceiro quarteto de cordas de Béla Bartók / Synthesis of East and West: an axes of symmetry analysis of Bartóks Third String Quartet

3. Structural analysis and shape-dependent catalytic activity of Au, Pt and Au/Pt nanoparticles
Metallic nanoparticles of Au, Pt and Pt/Au have been synthesized using a chemical reduction approach. The structural characterization of these metallic nanoparticles has been carried out using conventional transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) techniques. HR-TEM images of Pt nanoparticles reveal

In the present thesis, we study theoretically the equilibrium properties and dynamics of the vortex matter in two classes of nanostructured superconductors: (i) mesoscopic samples, with dimensions comparable with the penetration depth; and (ii) films with periodic array of artificial traps. In both cases, the vortex lattice symmetry is strongly dependent on

Study and development of techniques for curvature and symmetry axes calculation.

6. Symmetry, homology, and phrasing in the recognition of helical regulatory sequences in DNA.
Regulatory regions in DNA which have been sequenced have generally been found to contain one or more axes of two-fold rotational symmetry. If this symmetry is to be maintained in the helical sequence, the axis of rotation must be aligned with one of the two dyad axes of the helix. This is equivalent to saying that the rotational symmetry of the sequence can

7. Electron cryo-microscopy and image reconstruction of adeno-associated virus type 2 empty capsids
Adeno-associated virus type 2 empty capsids are composed of three proteins, VP1, VP2 and VP3, which have relative molecular masses of 87, 72 and 62 kDa, respectively, and differ in their N-terminal amino acid sequences. They have a likely molar ratio of 1:1:8 and occupy symmetrical equivalent positions in an icosahedrally arranged protein shell. We have inve

8. Mutational Analysis of Narrow Pores at the Fivefold Symmetry Axes of Adeno-Associated Virus Type 2 Capsids Reveals a Dual Role in Genome Packaging and Activation of Phospholipase A2 Activity
Adeno-associated virus type 2 (AAV2) capsids show 12 pores at the fivefold axes of symmetry. We mutated amino acids which constitute these pores to investigate possible functions of these structures within the AAV2 life cycle. Mutants with alterations in conserved residues were impaired mainly in genome packaging or infectivity, whereas few mutants were affe

9. Three-Dimensional Structure of Aleutian Mink Disease Parvovirus: Implications for Disease Pathogenicity
The three-dimensional structure of expressed VP2 capsids of Aleutian mink disease parvovirus strain G (ADVG-VP2) has been determined to 22 Å resolution by cryo-electron microscopy and image reconstruction techniques. A structure-based sequence alignment of the VP2 capsid protein of canine parvovirus (CPV) provided a means to construct an atomic model of th

10. Structure of an S layer on a pathogenic strain of Aeromonas hydrophila.
Negative staining revealed a tetragonal surface array (S layer) on all the members of a serogroup of Aeromonas hydrophila which possess high virulence for fish. The S layers were similar on all the strains examined, with unit cell dimensions of approximately 12 nm. A single representative strain, strain TF7, was selected for further analysis. Freeze-cleaved

11. Screw rotations and glide mirrors: Crystallography in Fourier space
The traditional crystallographic symmetry elements of screw axes and glide planes are subdivided into those that are removable and those that are essential. A simple real-space criterion, depending only on Bravais class, determines which types can be present in any space group. This terminological refinement is useful in expressing the complementary relation

12. THE STRUCTURE OF MOUSE-ELBERFELD VIRUS: A MODEL*
It is proposed that the capsid structure of mouse-Elberfeld (ME) virus, a small icosahedral ribonucleic acid containing picornavirus, is determined by 60 identical protein subunits; each of the latter is composed of several non-identical polypeptide chains. Icosahedral symmetry in a 60-subunit shell allows three types of specific intersubunit bonding contact
