1. Chronic hepatitis C and fibrosis: evidences for possible estrogen benefits
The main injury caused by hepatitis C virus is the hepatic fibrosis, as a result of a chronic inflammatory process in the liver characterized by the deposit of components from the extracellular matrix. The fibrosis development leads to the modification of the hepatic architecture, of the hepatocellular function and to irregularities in the microcirculation.

2. Role of mast cells in ischemic acute renal failure / Participação de mastocitos na lesão renal induzida por isquemia/reperfusão
Renal ischemia is the main cause of acute renal failure in both native and transplanted kidneys. Ischemia/reperfusion lesion includes changes in renal hemodynamic, endothelial and tubular cell lesion, and inflammatory process, resulting in endothelial cell activation, increased adhesion of endothelial cells and leukocytes, migration of circulating cells to d

3. Expressão precoce de CD34, CD68, α-actina de músculo liso e COX-2 no estroma pericriptal durante carcinogênese colônica induzida quimicamente em ratos. / Early Expression of CD34, CD68, α-smooth muscle actin and COX-2 in pery-crypt stroma during chemically-induced rat colonic carcinogenesis.
There has been considerable that the activity of epithelial cells with their stroma is fundamental in controlling growth and differentiation in normal and pathological situations, including cancer. A number of reports stress the importance of the stromal compartment in malignant tumors and strongly indicate that continuous interactions between the carcinoma

4. Distribution of alpha-vascular smooth muscle actin in the smooth muscle cells of the gastrointestinal tract of the chicken.
Immunoreactivity specific for alpha-vascular smooth muscle actin (ASMA) was examined in the enteric smooth muscle cells along the entire length of the gastrointestinal tract of the chicken. Specificity for gamma-smooth muscle actin (GSMA) and desmin was also examined. All smooth muscle layers, i.e. the muscularis mucosae, and the circular and longitudinal mu

5. Comparison of the use of antibodies to alpha smooth muscle actin and desmin in pulmonary lymphangioleiomyomatosis.
To establish if antibodies to alpha smooth muscle actin (ASMA) are better than desmin as a tumour marker in pulmonary lymphangioleiomyomatosis both antisera were applied to five cases. ASMA strongly stained the muscle in all cases but desmin was negative. Five cases of cryptogenic fibrosing alveolitis showed that mature smooth muscle embedded in fibrous tiss

6. Immunoreactivity of alpha smooth muscle actin in salivary gland tumours: a comparison with S100 protein.
Antibodies against alpha smooth muscle actin (ASMA) and S100 protein were applied to paraffin wax embedded sections from 40 salivary gland tumours and seven normal salivary glands. The results indicate that ASMA is useful in the diagnosis of epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma, but is otherwise only of limited use in diagnostic practice. An unexpected finding

7. Electrophilic Peroxisome Proliferator–Activated Receptor-γ Ligands Have Potent Antifibrotic Effects in Human Lung Fibroblasts
Pulmonary fibrosis is a progressive scarring disease with no effective treatment. Transforming growth factor (TGF)-β is up-regulated in fibrotic diseases, where it stimulates differentiation of fibroblasts to myofibroblasts and production of excess extracellular matrix. Peroxisome proliferator–activated receptor (PPAR) γ is a transcription factor that re

8. Isolation, immortalization, and characterization of a human breast epithelial cell line with stem cell properties
The epithelial compartment of the human breast comprises two distinct lineages: the luminal epithelial and the myoepithelial lineage. We have shown previously that a subset of the luminal epithelial cells could convert to myoepithelial cells in culture signifying the possible existence of a progenitor cell. We therefore set out to identify and isolate the pu
