1. Isoxazolinas: uma classe de materiais avançados revisitada
The synthesis and characterization of novel series of liquid crystalline materials containing N-heterocyclic isoxazoline are described. These molecules were obtained from the reaction of 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of nitrile oxides to different compounds containing double bonds. Thermal properties were analyzed by MOLP, DSC and TGA, and optical properties by

2. Geometria, Topologia e Elasticidade: aplicações a membranas e outros sistemas bidimensionais
Geometry, topology and elasticity are found in various branchs of physics and they play important roles in the understanding of many physical phenomena. In this work, we present three diferent systems where we can see such importance. First, a quantum neutral particle, constrained to move on a conical surface, is used as a toy model to explore bound states d

3. Transições de fase em polimeros liquido-cristalinos de cadeia lateral / Phase transitions in side-chain liquid-cristaline polmers
Polymeric liquid crystals are materials that combine properties of both polymers and liquid crystals. These polymers can be thought as block copolymers made of ftexible and rigid molecular blocks. As in flexible block copolymers, the macrophase separation originated from the repulsion between different blocks is frustrated by the connectivity constraint impo

4. Bidimensional instability in antiferroelectric liquid crystals
In the last decade it has been experimentally found a periodic domain pattern arising in smectic C* liquid crystals in surface stabilized bookshelf geometry. Such a periodic texture appears after switching-off an external electric field, even in strong anchoring conditions. It has a static character and can be bidimensional, being dependent on both direction

5. New liquid crystalline tolanes from (-)-menthone
Synthetic manipulations were carried out with the aim of obtaining an advanced linear fragment for production of thermotropic liquid crystals. The chiral fragment synthesised was introduced in a tolanbenzoate mesogenic core by coupling of Sonogashira. The final chiral tolans showed smectic A and C and nematic liquid crystalline phases. The crystallographic s

6. Preparation of large monodomain phospholipid bilayer smectic liquid crystals.
A technique for the preparation of large monodomain phospholipid bilayer arrays is described. Evidence for the monodomain nature of the samples, obtained from optical birefringence, light scattering, and x-ray diffraction experiments, is presented.

7. Liquid crystalline lipid in the plasma of humans with biliary obstruction
Plasma lipoprotein characteristics were evaluated in a group of patients with obstructed biliary tracts. A 1:1 molar lecithin-free cholesterol liquid crystal phase was observed in the low density flotation region of these patients. The smectic nature of this mesophase was confirmed by electron microscopy, polarized microscopy, and low angle X-ray scattering.
