1. Isolation, Absolute Configuration and Cytotoxic Activities of Alkaloids from Hippeastrum goianum (Ravenna) Meerow (Amaryllidaceae)
The phytochemical study of Hippeastrum goianum led to the identification of 13 compounds by means of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Compounds 7-demethoxy-9-O-methylhostasine (1) and 7-deoxi-trans-dihydronarciclasine (2) had their absolute configurations determined by vibrational circular dichroism (VCD). Th

2. Chlorophyll treatment combined with photostimulation increases glycolysis and decreases oxidative stress in the liver of type 1 diabetic rats
Photodynamic therapy (PDT) promotes cell death, and it has been successfully employed as a treatment resource for neuropathic complications of diabetes mellitus (T1DM) and hepatocellular carcinoma. The liver is the major organ involved in the regulation of energy homeostasis, and in pathological conditions such as T1DM, changes in liver metabolic pathways re

3. Synthesis, DNA Interaction and Genotoxic Evaluation of a Photoactive Benzothiadiazole with Potential Application in Photovoltaic Paint
A new fluorophore containing 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole unit with alkylated tetrazole terminal groups as electron donors connected through a π-conjugated system of the type (D-π-A-π-D) was synthesized using the Sonogashira coupling reaction with good yields. The genotoxicity of the two intermediate compounds and the final product was evaluated in vitro in con

4. Pigmented squamous cell carcinoma: case report and importance of differential diagnosis
Abstract: A few cases of pigmented squamous cell carcinoma affecting the skin and the ocular and oral mucosa of the elderly have been described in the literature. The disease manifests itself as papular and nodular erythematous or pigmented lesions. The main clinical differential diagnoses are pigmented basal cell carcinoma and melanoma. Histopathological ex

5. Enhancement of pigment extraction from B. braunii pretreated using CO2 rapid depressurization
Abstract Extraction of compounds from microalgae requires cell disruption as a pretreatment to increase extraction yield. Botryococcus braunii is a microalga with a significant content of carotenoids and other antioxidant compounds, such as chlorophylls. Cell disruption of B. braunii using CO2 rapid depressurization was studied as a pretreatment for the extr

6. Phaeohyphomycosis in renal transplantation: report of two cases
Abstract Phaeohyphomycosis is an infection caused by a filamentous fungus that contains pigment melanin in its cell wall. We report two cases caused by Exophiala sp. emphasizing the clinical variability of the disease, as well as diagnostic and therapeutic difficulties of this opportunistic infection in immunosuppressed patients (kidney transplant).

7. The relation between dermoscopy and histopathology of basal cell carcinoma
Abstract BACKGROUND: Basal cell carcinoma is the most frequent cancer in fair-skinned populations and dermoscopy is an important, non-invasive technique that aids in the diagnosis of Basal cell carcinoma. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between histopathological subtypes and dermoscopic features of Basal cell carcinoma. MET

8. T-cell-predominant lymphoid hyperplasia in a tattoo
Cutaneous lymphoid hyperplasia (CLH) can be idiopathic or secondary to external stimuli, and is considered rare in tattoos. The infiltrate can be predominantly of B or T-cells, the latter being seldom reported in tattoos. We present a case of a predominantly T CLH, secondary to the black pigment of tattooing in a 35-year-old patient, with a dense infiltrate

9. Composition, anti-quorum sensing and antimicrobial activity of essential oils from Lippia alba
Many Gram-negative pathogens have the ability to produce N-acylhomoserine lactones (AHLs) as signal molecules for quorum sensing (QS). This cell-cell communication system allows them to coordinate gene expression and regulate virulence. Strategies to inhibit QS are promising for the control of infectious diseases or antibiotic resistant bacterial pathogens.

10. Antitumor activity of C-phycocyanin from Arthronema africanum (Cyanophyceae)
Pure C-phycocyanin (C-PC) was isolated from Arthronema africanumto evaluate its potential antitumor effects in vivo and in vitro. Experimental myeloid Graffi tumor in hamsters was used as a model. The cell proliferation assay showed that C-PC treatment, at concentration of 100 µg mL-1 for 24 h, significantly inhibited the growth of Graffi tumor cells (51.4%

11. Indução do sistema citocromo P450 em linhagens de hepatoma humano para utilização como modelo in vitro no desenvolvimento de fármacos / Induction of cytochrome P450 system in human hepatoma cell lines for using as in vitro model in drug development
In the early development stage of the new drugs, the pharmacological and toxicological properties are critical to define the potential use of the candidate drug. During this stage, several in vitro models systems are employed, including human hepatoma cell lines. However, the main limitation of the use of cell lines as in vitro model is the low expression le

12. Effects of n-propyl gallate on photosynthesis and physiological parameters in Dunaliella salina are affected by stressful conditions
We studied the effects of n-propyl gallate, which is a plastid terminal oxidase inhibitor involved in chlororespiration, on photosynthesis and physiological parameters in Dunaliella salina grown under different salinities and under low or high irradiance using chlorophyll a fluorescence transient measurements and pigment analysis. The inhibitor up to 1 mM ha
