1. Carriage prevalence of Neisseria meningitidis in the Americas in the 21st century: a systematic review
Abstract Neisseria meningitidis is a bacterium that colonizes the human nasopharynx and is transmitted by respiratory droplets from asymptomatic or symptomatic carriers. Occasionally, the pathogen invades the mucosa and enters the bloodstream, causing invasive meningococcal disease, a life-threatening infection. While meningococcal colonization is the first

2. A cross-sectional study assessing the pharyngeal carriage of Neisseria meningitidis in subjects aged 1-24 years in the city of Embu das Artes, São Paulo, Brazil
ABSTRACT Meningococcal carriage is a prerequisite for invasive infection. This cross-sectional study assessed the pharyngeal carriage prevalence in healthy subjects aged 1-24 years in Embu das Artes city, São Paulo, Brazil. Pharyngeal swabs were examined for the presence of Neisseria meningitidis. The isolates were tested for different serogroups using aggl

3. Vaccination coverage in a cohort of HIV-infected patients receiving care at an AIDS outpatient clinic in Espírito Santo, Brazil
Abstract This cross-sectional study assessed the immunization status of human immune deficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients receiving care at an outpatient clinic in Brazil. The sociodemographic characteristics, CD4 count and HIV viral load of 281 out of 612 adult outpatients were analyzed. A total of 331 patients were excluded because of no availability o

4. Neisseria meningitidis presenting as acute abdomen and recurrent reactive pericarditis
ABSTRACT Meningococcal meningitis is a well established potential fatal infection characterized by fever, headache, petechial rash, and vomiting in the majority of cases. However, protean manifestations including abdominal pain, sore throat, diarrhea and cough, even though rare, should not be overlooked. Similarly, although disseminated infection could poten

5. Antibodies for Rickettsia spp. in patients with negative serology for dengue virus, leptospirosis, and meningococcal disease in municipalities of São Paulo State, Brazil
Abstract INTRODUCTION Brazilian spotted fever is an infectious disease with a high mortality rate if not treated early. Differential diagnosis is difficult, as the first clinical signs are non-specific and can be confused with other diseases. The aim of the study was to investigate evidence of infection with Rickettsia rickettsii and Rickettsia parkeri in

6. Fatores clínicos e laboratoriais associados à gravidade da doença meningocócica / Clinical and laboratory features associate with severity of meningococcal disease

Epidemiological profile of meningococcal disease, in the state of Minas Gerais, from 2000 to 2009.
The infection by Neisseria meningitis, named meningococcal disease (MD), can cause meningococcal meningitis and septicemia with or without meningitis. MD is an endemic disease in Brazil, however, has a high potential to cause epidemics and high case fatality which require immediate notification of the cases. The aims of this study were to describe an epidemi

8. Comparison of dot-ELISA and standard ELISA for detection of Neisseria meningitidis outer membrane complex-specific antibodies
Dot-ELISA using the outer membrane complex antigens of Neisseria meningitidis as a target was standardized for rapid detection of meningococcal-specific antibodies in human serum. We investigated the level of meningococcal-specific IgG, IgA, and IgM in serum using dot-ELISA with outer membrane antigens prepared from Neisseria meningitidis serotype B:4.19:P1.

9. A new meningococcal conjugate vaccine: What should physicians know and do?
A quadrivalent meningococcal conjugate vaccine for serogroups A, C, Y and W135 (MCV4 [Menactra, sanofi pasteur, Canada]) was introduced in Canada in 2007 for persons two years of age or older. MCV4 adds three serogroups to the meningococcal serogroup C conjugate vaccine, which has been used for several years. The rates of invasive meningococcal serogroup C i

10. Neisseria lactamica Protects against Experimental Meningococcal Infection
Immunological and epidemiological evidence suggests that the development of natural immunity to meningococcal disease results from colonization of the nasopharynx by commensal Neisseria spp., particularly with N. lactamica. We report here that immunization with N. lactamica killed whole cells, outer membrane vesicles, or outer membrane protein (OMP) pools an

11. Serotypes of group B meningococci.
Strains of group B meningococci isolated from cases of sporadic infection, epidemic infection, and from patients unassociated with clinical meningococcal infection have been examined by a serological typing technique. The majority of group B meningococci from clinical infections in the UK have serotype 2 antigen. Such strains were relatively uncommon among c

12. Primary meningococcal arthritis associated with adult respiratory distress syndrome.
A previously fit and well 20 year old man with primary meningococcal arthritis of the left knee is described. Despite intensive search there was no evidence of extra-articular meningococcal infection. He subsequently developed adult respiratory distress syndrome as a rare and previously undescribed complication.
