1. Melioidosis parotitis in children
Abstract A recent paper published in JVATiTD reporting a child in Hainan with parotitis caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei misleadingly described parotitis as a rare manifestation of melioidosis. In fact, it is one of the commonest forms of paediatric melioidosis seen in other parts of Southeast Asia, although interestingly not in Australia.

Melioidosis is a serious infectious disease caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei, a Gram negative rod, commonly found in soil and water. The disease is endemic in Southeastern Asia and hyperendemic in Northern Australia. Despite the initiation of empiric therapy, mortality remains at 21% in patients with melioidosis in Australia. In Brazil, it is considered a

3. The public health implications of melioidosis
Melioidosis, which is caused by the bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei, is a potentially fatal tropical infection, little known outside its main endemic zone of Southeast Asia and northern Australia. Though it has received more attention in recent years on account of its claimed suitability as a biological weapon agent, the principal threat from melioidosis

4. Phenotypic characterization of three clinical isolates of Burkholderia pseudomallei in Ceará, Brazil
Burkholderia pseudomallei, the causative agent of melioidosis was found in a small cluster of cases in Tejuçuoca, Ceará, Brazil. Tests were carried out to determine its phenotypic characteristics: colony morphology on Ashdown agar and MacConkey agar, biochemical profile in conventional biochemical tests and API 20NE, arabinose assimilation and susceptibili

6. Further Evaluation of a Rapid Diagnostic Test for Melioidosis in an Area of Endemicity
Immunochromatographic test (ICT) kits for the rapid detection of immunoglobulin G (IgG) and IgM antibodies to Burkholderia pseudomallei were compared to the indirect hemagglutination (IHA) assay. In 138 culture-confirmed melioidosis cases, sensitivities were 80, 77, and 88% for IHA, ICT IgG, and ICT IgM, respectively. In a prospective study of 160 consecutiv

7. Outcomes of Patients with Melioidosis Treated with Meropenem
Melioidosis, an infection due to Burkholderia pseudomallei, is endemic in southeast Asia and northern Australia. We reviewed our experience with meropenem in the treatment of severe melioidosis in 63 patients over a 6-year period. Outcomes were similar to those of ceftazidime-treated patients (n = 153) despite a deliberate selection bias to more-unwell patie

8. Melioidosis: the tip of the iceberg?
For nearly 80 years clinical melioidosis has been considered a rare disease. This bacterial infection is caused by Pseudomonas pseudomallei, a saprophyte found in soil and surface water of endemic areas. Consequently, those who have most contact with soil, the rural poor, are likely to be at greatest risk of infection. Since the diversity of clinical manifes

9. Value of Throat Swab in Diagnosis of Melioidosis
Throat swab (TS) cultures were performed for 1,011 patients with melioidosis and 3,524 healthy subjects or patients with other diseases. The specificity of TS culture for the diagnosis of melioidosis was 100%, and the overall sensitivity was 36% (24% for sputum-negative patients and 79% for sputum-positive patients). Direct plating of the TS specimen on Ashd

10. Chronic Melioidosis in a Patient with Cystic Fibrosis
Burkholderia pseudomallei, the causative agent of melioidosis, is endemic in Southeast Asia and northern Australia, where it can be found in soil and surface water. We report a case of chronic pulmonary melioidosis in a patient with cystic fibrosis who had traveled to an area where B. pseudomallei is endemic.

11. Immunofluorescence microscopy for the rapid diagnosis of melioidosis.
A direct immunofluorescent antibody test (DIF) was developed for the rapid diagnosis of melioidosis, a potentially fatal infection caused by Pseudomonas pseudomallei. In a clinical evaluation of 369 sputum, pus, or urine specimens from 272 patients with suspected melioidosis, the DIF had a sensitivity of 73% and a specificity of 99% compared with culture. Us

12. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for immunoglobulin M specific antibody for the diagnosis of melioidosis.
Indirect hemagglutination (IHA) is commonly used for serodiagnosis of melioidosis. However, in endemic areas, high background titers in normal populations and occasional low titers in patients with septicemic melioidosis prompted a search for a more sensitive and more specific method of serodiagnosis. An indirect fluorescent-antibody test for immunoglobulin
