1. Sintering mechanisms of partially stabilized zirconia (TZ3Y) with ZnO and Co3O4 as sintering additives
Abstract In this work, the sintering mechanisms of 3 mol% yttria-stabilized zirconia (TZ3Y) and TZ3Y containing 0.3 wt% of ZnO or Co3O4 were analyzed by determining the apparent activation energy of sintering from dilatometry data and observing the evolution of microstructure. Dilatometry test was performed at a heating rate ranging from 5 to 20 °C/min from

2. Effect of LZSA glass-ceramic addition on the erosive wear of pressureless sintered alumina
Abstract This study aims to evaluate the influence of the 11.6Li2O-16.8ZrO2-68.2SiO2-3.4Al2O3 (mol%) glass-ceramic addition (LZSA, 7 to 21 vol%) on the erosive wear of alumina in comparison to values of pure alumina obtained from the literature. Thus, composites were prepared from three commercial alumina of different initial particle sizes. Specimens were o

3. Firing Behavior of the Clay Fraction of a Natural Kaolinitic Clay: Are They Different?
A comparative investigation on the firing behavior of a natural kaolinitic clay from Campos dos Goytacazes, Brazil, and its specific clay fraction was performed. The clay fraction, equivalent diameter less than 2 µm, was separated from the precursor clay by a sedimentation method. Chemical analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy w

4. Semi-solid Sintering of Ti6Al4V/CoCrMo Composites for Biomedical Applications
A composite of Ti6Al4V reinforced with CoCrMo particles is fabricated by conventional powder metallurgy and semi-solid sintering. Composites are fabricated by mixing 20% wt. of CoCrMo reinforcing particles into the Ti6Al4V matrix. Sintering is studied by dilatometry tests between 1050 and 1130 °C and compact characterization is performed by SEM and XRD. Mic

5. Microstructure, Mechanical Properties and in vitro Biological Behavior of Silicon Nitride Ceramics
The bioinert surface of silicon nitride ceramics led us to investigate the additions of SiO2, CaO and Al2O3 in order to aid the liquid phase sintering and improve the mechanical properties and biological behavior of the final materials. The sintered materials reached ca. 97% of theoretical density and total α→β-Si3N4 transformation. The samples had relat

6. Synthesis of As-sintered 60NiTi Parts with a High Open Porosity Level
60NiTi, despite exhibiting attractive chemical and mechanical properties desirable for biomedical applications, has not yet been processed to a porous structure suitable for general bone replacement applications. In this research, elemental Ni and Ti powders were used to process and manufacture 60NiTi parts by employing conventional press-and-sinter method.

7. Influence of additives on phase stabilization of scandia-doped zirconia
ABSTRACT The effects of small additions of tin, zinc, calcium and boron oxides on phase composition and electrical conductivity of zirconia-10 mol% scandia were investigated. Compounds containing 1 mol% zinc, tin and calcium oxides and 1, 3 and 5 wt.% boron oxide were prepared by solid state reaction and characterized by X-ray diffraction, density measuremen

8. Microstructural Characterization and Influence of Ceramography Method on the Microhardness of Sintering Agents Added Silicon Carbide
This study carried out the microstructural characterization, by light microscopy, of sintered SiC in the presence of liquid phase at temperatures of 1800, 1850 and 1900 ºC, added with Al2O3 and Y2O3 as well with Al2O3-YAG composite in the proportions of 5, 10 and 15% by weight. It was possible to observe the formation of microstructural patterns resulting f

9. Melting Temperature and Wetting Angle of AlN/Dy2O3 and AlN/Yb2O3 Mixtures on SiC Substrates
AbstractThis work aims to evaluate the melting temperature and wetting behavior of AlN/Re2O3 (Re = Dy, Yb) mixtures when in contact with SiC substrates at high temperatures, in order to define whether these compounds can be further used to induce a more effective liquid phase sintering of SiC-based products. The prepared samples were placed on SiC plates and

10. Properties of SiC Ceramics Sintered via Liquid Phase Using Al2O3 + Y2O3, Al2O3 + Yb2O3 and Al2O3 + Dy2O3 as Additives: a Comparative Study
Silicon carbide (SiC) ceramics show excellent performance at high temperatures. Due to the high covalence of Si-C bonds, these ceramics are produced successfully only via liquid phase sintering (LPS). In this work, SiC ceramics were sintered via LPS using eutectic mixtures of Al2O3+Y2O3, which served as a standard for comparison, Al2O3+Yb2O3 and Al2O3+Dy2O3.

11. Development of self-lubricating composite materials of nickel with molybdenum disulfide, graphite and hexagonal boron nitride processed by powder metallurgy: preliminary study
The purpose of this work was to develop nickel self-lubricating composites using solid lubricant as second phase and obtained by powder metallurgy. The work involved the study of chemical stability and chemical interaction between the nickel alloy matrix and solid lubricating additives (molybdenum disulfide, graphite and hexagonal boron nitride). The results

12. Investigation of spodumene-bearing rock as a flux for bone china production
The use of a waste from mineral processing, a spodumene-bearing rock, was investigated as a flux for bone china composition, partially replacing feldspar. The effect of lithium oxide in bone china body was favorable for reducing firing temperature. The presence of Li2O reacting with other oxides and silicates formed a liquid phase of lower viscosity, which w
