13. Effects of experimental pulmonary hemodynamic overload on cardiovascular system and pulmonary structural and function / Efeitos da sobrecarga hemodinâmica pulmonar experimental no sistema cardiovascular e na estrutura e função pulmonar
INTRODUCTION: The pulmonary hemodynamic overload (PHO) is associates to high mortality and morbidity clinical entities as: postpneumonectomy pulmonary edema, pulmonary thromboembolism, lung transplantation and physiological situations as physical exercise. Some pathophysiological aspects related to PHO are not elucidated. OBJECTIVES: To study pulmonary and c

14. Parâmetros de predição de risco cardiovascular em pacientes infectados pelo HIV
Introduction: The epidemic resulting from infection by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) continues to spread in an alarming manner and WHO estimates that 33 million individuals are living with HIV worldwide in 2007. Following the introduction of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), HIV infection assumed the characteristics of a chronic disease

15. Efeito do treinamento físico no remodelamento de grandes artérias em ratos normotensos e hipertensos. / Effect of exercise training in the remodeling of large arteries in spontaneously hypertensive and normotensive rats.
We investigated the effects of exercise training (T) on the possible remodeling of large arteries of spontaneously hypertensive (SHR) and normotensive rats (WKY). The animals were submitted to treadmill T (50-60% of maximum capacity, 1h/day, 5 d/week) or kept sedentary (S) for 3 months. At the end of the protocols, they were submitted to chronic cannulation

16. Estudo das alterações hemodinamicas decorrentes da utilização de dois tipos de estabilizadores para operações de revascularização do miocardio sem circulação extracorporea : trabalho experimental
Introduction: The coronary artery bypass grafting was initially conceived in the middle of the last century but only achieved widespread indications after development of cardiopulmonary bypass during the sixties with the studies by Favaloro. Since the nineties, there has been a growing interest in off-pump procedures, with the acquisition of new technologies

17. Corrected transposition of the great arteries with several associated anomalies in a 68-year-old patient
Few patients with corrected transposition of the great arteries survive past 50 years of age because of the association with congenital defects, development of total atrioventricular block, and right ventricular dysfunction. We report the case of a male patient with dextrocardia in situs solitus and corrected transposition of the great arteries associated wi

18. Role of Large Arteries in Regulation of Cerebral Blood Flow in Dogs
Previous studies have demonstrated a significant pressure gradient from carotid artery to pial or middle cerebral arteries. This pressure gradient suggests that large cerebral arteries contribute to cerebral resistance. We have tested the hypothesis that large cerebral arteries contribute to regulation of cerebral blood flow during changes in blood gases and

19. Role of large arteries in regulation of blood flow to brain stem in cats.
1. The goal of this study was to examine the regulation of resistance in the large arteries and small vessels that supply the brain stem. 2. We used a new method in anaesthetized cats to measure blood flow to the medulla (microspheres) and pressure (servo-null) in branches of the basilar artery that supply the medulla. Resistance was determined during normoc

20. The microscopical appearances of human peripheral arteries during growth and aging
Twelve peripheral arteries are described in 59 patients of all ages. Accumulation of ground substance in the media, accompanied by small foci of calcification of the internal elastic lamina, was found in the large leg arteries of young adults, and progressively in a wider series of arteries throughout life. This picture showed no relationship to hypertension

21. Enalapril Treatment Alters the Contribution of Epoxyeicosatrienoic Acids but Not Gap Junctions to Endothelium-Derived Hyperpolarizing Factor Activity in Mesenteric Arteries of Spontaneously Hypertensive Rats
Reduction in endothelium-derived hyperpolarizing factor (EDHF)-mediated dilatory function in large, elastic arteries during hypertension is reversed after blood pressure normalization. We investigated whether similar mechanisms occurred in smaller mesenteric resistance arteries from aged Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats, spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs), an

24. Arterial vasa vasorum: a quantitative study in the rat.
This study was designed to quantitate the vasa vasorum of common iliac arteries in 20 rats. The number of vasa vasorum per mm2 of arterial wall was extremely variable - from 0 to 124, the mean being 33 . 95 +/- 29 . 86 (S.D.). There was no significant difference in the vasa vasorum vascularity between the right and left common iliac arteries. The mean wall t
