1. Hábitos alimenticios de poblaciones periféricas de Zaedyus pichiy y Chaetophractus villosus (Cingulata, Chlamyphoridae) en la Patagonia chilena
ABSTRACT In Chile the armadillos Zaedyus pichiy (Desmarest, 1804) and Chaetophractus villosus (Desmarest, 1804) have peripheral populations restricted to steppes and plains near western slopes of the Andes, being also inadequately studied. We present information on feeding habits of both species by analysis of feces obtained in two study areas of Aysén dist

3. Reparação de feridas cutâneas incisionais em coelhos após tratamento com barbatimão e quitosana / Repair of incisional wounds in rabbits after treatment with chitosan and barbatimão

The population richness, composition, abundance and density of non-volant mammals of mata Ribeirão Cachoeira forest, a 230 ha semideciduous forest fragment in the outskirts of Campinas, São Paulo, were studied between 2001 and 2003. The main objective was to evaluate the importance of this forest fragment to the local and regional conservation of the nativ

6. Detection and preliminary characterization of a new rabbit calicivirus related to rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus but nonpathogenic.
A new rabbit calicivirus related to the rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus (RHDV) was identified. The new virus contains significant differences from the previously characterized RHDV isolates in terms of pathogenicity, viral titer, tropism, and primary sequence of the structural protein. Cross-protection experiments, antigenic data, and sequence comparisons d

7. Ochotona princeps (pika) myoglobin: an appraisal of lagomorph phylogeny.
Myoglobin was purified from skeletal muscle of the pika (Ochotona princeps) and its primary structure was determined. This sequence was added to the set of 64 already known vertebrate myoglobin sequences and used to evaluate the phylogenetic position of the pika among other mammals, using a computerized search procedure based on maximum parsimony criteria. T

8. The Pattern of Mammalian Evolution and the Relative Rate of Molecular Evolution
The rates of nucleotide substitution at four genes in four orders of eutherian mammals are compared in relative rate tests using marsupial orthologs for reference. There is no evidence of systematic variation in evolutionary rate among the orders. The sequences are used to reconstruct the phylogeny of the orders using maximum likelihood, parsimony and compat

9. Synonymous nucleotide substitution rates in mammalian genes: implications for the molecular clock and the relationship of mammalian orders.
Synonymous substitution rates have been estimated for 58 genes compared among primates, artiodactyls, and rodents. Although silent sites might be expected to be neutral, there is substantial rate variation among genes within each lineage. Some of the rate variation is associated with G + C content: genes with intermediate G + C values have the highest rates.

10. The LINE-1 DNA sequences in four mammalian orders predict proteins that conserve homologies to retrovirus proteins.
Recent work suggests that one or more members of the highly repeated LINE-1 (L1) DNA family found in all mammals may encode one or more proteins. Here we report the sequence of a portion of an L1 cloned from the domestic cat (Felis catus). These data permit comparison of the L1 sequences in four mammalian orders (Carnivore, Lagomorph, Rodent and Primate) and

11. Can parasites drive population cycles in mountain hares?
Understanding the drivers of population fluctuations is a central goal of ecology. Although well-established theory suggests that parasites can drive cyclic population fluctuations in their hosts, field evidence is lacking. Theory predicts that a parasite that loosely aggregates in the host population and has stronger impact on host fecundity than survival s
