1. Accumulation of organic and inorganic solutes in NaCl-stressed sorghum seedlings from aged and primed seeds
Although it has been known that the seed's physiological potential affects its response to osmoconditioning and abiotic stresses, researches involving seed aging and priming associated to abiotic stresses are scarce. The aim of this work was to evaluate the role of seed priming on salt tolerance in sorghum seedlings from seeds with two vigor levels (aged or

2. AlteraÃÃes fisiolÃgicas induzidas por estresses abiÃticos em plantas jovens de pinhÃo-manso / PHYSIOLOGICAL CHANGES INDUCED BY ABIOTIC STRESSES IN PHYSIC NUT YOUNG PLANTS
In this work were studied diverse physiological mechanisms, as the osmotic adjustment, photosynthesis, including gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters, as well the oxidative responses in physic nuts submitted to different abiotic stresses as: salinity, drought and high temperature. The first experiment aimed to study the effects of increase of

3. Crescimento, trocas gasosas, partiÃÃo de Ãons e metabolismo do nitrogÃnio em plantas de milho submetidas à salinidade e diferentes fontes de N / Growth, gas exchange, partition of ions and nitrogen metabolism in maize plants subjected to salinity and different nitrogen sources

4. Behavior of dissolved inorganic N in surface and sub-surface waters in a cultivated sugar cane area / Comportamento do N inorgânico dissolvido em águas superficiais e sub-superficiais em área com cultivo de cana-de-açúcar
The sugar cane is an important agricultural activity in Brazil and its productivity is related to several factors, such as the availability of suitable nutrients quantities, with emphasis on the nitrogen. However, the constant use of fertilizers increases the possibility of environmental contamination, mainly in water bodies. In this study were evaluated the

5. Efeitos da salinidade e da composiÃÃo iÃnica da Ãgua de irrigaÃÃo sobre o desenvolvimento de plantas de feijÃo-de-corda / Effects of salinity and ionic composition of the water irrigation on the development of cowpea plants [Vigna unguiculata(L.)].
The use of the inadequate water in irrigation can be prejudicial to the plants. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of salinity and chemical composition of irrigation water on plant growth, mineral nutrition, gas exchange, and organic solutes contents of cowpea plants [Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.]. Plants were cultivated in plastic pots, u

6. ContribuiÃÃo de solutos orgÃnicos e inorgÃnicos no potencial osmÃtico de folhas de atriplex nummularia submetidas ao NaCl, SECA E PEG / Contribution of organic and inorganic solutes in the osmotic potential of leaves of Atriplex nummularia submitted to NaCl, DROUGHT AND PEG

7. Effects of Inorganic Solutes on the Binding of Auxin 1
The binding of α-naphthaleneacetic acid (14C-NAA) to pelletable particulates from corn (Zea mays) coleoptiles was found to be influenced by inorganic solutes. La3+, Ca2+, and Mg2+ increased the binding whereas monovalent cations did not. The concentrations of CaCl2 which increased auxin binding were similar to those which inhibited coleoptile elongation in

8. Effects of Inorganic Salts on Tissue Permeability 1
Inorganic solutes are shown to alter the permeability of root and leaf tissues. Experiments with beet root tissues reveal that CaCl2 decreases leakage of betacyanin from the tissue, that (NH4)2SO4 increases leakage, and that each salt can relieve the effects of the other. A comparison of cations and anions shows a range of effects with the various solutes. E

11. Growth, Water Relations, and Accumulation of Organic and Inorganic Solutes in Roots of Maize Seedlings during Salt Stress.
Seedlings of maize (Zea mays L. cv Pioneer 3906), hydroponically grown in the dark, were exposed to NaCl either gradually (salt acclimation) or in one step (salt shock). In the salt-acclimation treatment, root extension was indistinguishable from that of unsalinized controls for at least 6 d at concentrations up to 100 mM NaCl. By contrast, salt shock rapidl

12. Responses of Halophytes to High Salinities and Low Water Potentials 1
The effects of nonsaline polyethylene glycol (PEG)-6000 and saline seawater solutions of comparable osmotic potential on the concentrations of organic solutes and inorganic ions in the tissues of halophytes (Plantago maritima L., Triglochin maritima L., Limonium vulgare Mill., Halimione portulacoides (L.) Aell) have been investigated. Studies were made to de
