13. Comparative study of Hepatitis C virus genotypes 1 and 3 in Salvador, Bahia
Hepatitis C virus displays a high degree of genetic mutation, with considerable heterogeneity, motivating clinical and biomolecular investigations. It is necessary to understand the effects of genotypes on the course of the disease, as well as their peculiarities at the regional level. OBJECTIVE: The study objective was to compare epidemiological, biochemica

14. P-selectin, carcinoma metastasis and heparin: novel mechanistic connections with therapeutic implications
Metastasis is a multistep cascade initiated when malignant cells penetrate the tissue surrounding the primary tumor and enter the bloodstream. Classic studies indicated that blood platelets form complexes around tumor cells in the circulation and facilitate metastases. In other work, the anticoagulant drug heparin diminished metastasis in murine models, as w

15. Adolescents, drugs and aids: evaluating prevention and accessing needs / Adolescentes, Drogas e Aids - Avaliando a Prevenção e Levantando Necessidades.
The object of this study is the prevention related to drug use and focused on adolescents. Its objective is to evaluate the public policy in this field. Particularly, a public school prevention project is analyzed. The Escola é Vida project took place between 1991 and 1994 in the public schools of the São Paulo state. The analysis was developed from consid

16. Target-Organ Treatment of Neurotropic Virus Diseases: Efficacy as a Chemotherapy Tool and Comparison of Activity of Adenine Arabinoside, Cytosine Arabinoside, Idoxuridine, and Trifluorothymidine
A sensitive in vivo system was studied for use in evaluating relatively small quantities of antiviral compounds. Swiss mice were injected intracerebrally with 10 LD50 of type 1 herpes simplex virus (HSV) or vaccinia virus. Test compounds were injected intracerebrally into mice at a standard time interval after virus inoculation. Significant increases in the

17. Bacteremia Due to Three Bacillus Species in a Case of Munchausen's Syndrome
We report on a case of recurrent bacteremia due to three Bacillus spp. in an immunocompetent patient with no history of intravenous drug use. The source of the organisms was postulated to be a self-injected compound containing Bacillus spores, given the patient's past history of psychiatric illness and self-destructive behavior.

18. Assessing and improving needle exchange programs: gaps and problems in the literature
Based on an extensive review of the needle exchange program (NEP) literature, the author sought to identify weaknesses in NEP evaluations published to date. Surprisingly, it was apparent that NEP researchers often fail to: (1) collect comparison/change data; (2) agree on appropriate and consistent dependent variables to measure; (3) use valid and reliable me

19. Methadone maintenance treatment and HIV risk-taking behaviour among injecting drug users in Berlin.
STUDY OBJECTIVE: To determine whether methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) is effective in reducing the levels of HIV risk-taking behaviour (borrowing and lending of injection equipment, irregular condom use) among injecting drug users (IDUs), and to identify independent predictors of the borrowing of used syringes. DESIGN: Cross sectional study of IDUs in

20. Transdermal photopolymerization for minimally invasive implantation
Photopolymerizations are widely used in medicine to create polymer networks for use in applications such as bone restorations and coatings for artificial implants. These photopolymerizations occur by directly exposing materials to light in “open” environments such as the oral cavity or during invasive procedures such as surgery. We hypothesized that ligh

21. Improved procedure for determination of flucytosine in human blood plasma by high-pressure liquid chromatography.
Several high-pressure liquid chromatography procedures for the determination of flucytosine in serum or plasma have appeared. Some of these suffer from significant disadvantages, and none was applicable in our routine clinical therapeutic-drug-monitoring laboratory. A new high-pressure liquid chromatography assay for flucytosine was therefore developed. A 10

22. Gene therapy of rat 9L gliosarcoma tumors by transduction with selectable genes does not require drug selection.
9L rat glioma cells have been used as a model for brain tumor therapies. It has been reported that in vivo infection of 9L cells with a replication-defective retrovirus expressing the herpes simplex thymidine kinase gene resulted in decreased tumor formation following treatment with the antiviral drug ganciclovir. In the study reported here, rats were inject

23. A survey of female prostitutes at risk of HIV infection and other sexually transmissible diseases.
OBJECTIVE--To determine risk factors for the transmission of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), including injecting drug use (IDU), sexual behaviour and other sexually transmissible diseases (STDs), in female prostitutes who attended the Sydney Sexual Health (previously STD) Centre. DESIGN--We surveyed by questionnaire 231 (47%) of 491 female prostitutes wh

24. Assessment of a fluoroquinolone, three beta-lactams, two aminoglycosides, and a cycline in treatment of murine Yersinia pestis infection.
Amoxicillin, cefotaxime, ceftriaxone, gentamicin, doxycycline, and ofloxacin were active in vitro, like the reference drug streptomycin, against the virulent strain Yersinia pestis 6/69M. The comparative efficacies of these drugs in vivo were evaluated in a standardized and reproducible mouse model of systemic infection. Each antibiotic was injected intraven
