1. BIOCONVERSION OF CELLULOSE INTO HYDROGEN, BIOGAS AND ORGANIC ACIDS USING MICROBIAL CONSORTIUM FROM A PULP AND PAPER MILL WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT
This study evaluated the potential of a microbial consortium collected from a pulp and paper mill wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) for converting cellulose to hydrogen, biogas and organic acids. Fermentation tests were conducted in batch reactors fed with different concentrations of cellulose as substrate: (C1) 2.0 g L -1; (C2) 5.0 g L -1 and (C3) 10.0 g L

2. Comparing a Dynamic Fed-Batch and a Continuous Steady-State Simulation of Ethanol Fermentation in a Distillery to a Stoichiometric Conversion Simulation
Abstract An autonomous sugarcane bioethanol plant was simulated in EMSO software, an equation oriented process simulator. Three types of fermentation units were simulated: a six parallel fed-batch reactor system, a set of four CSTR in steady state and one consisting of a single stoichiometric reactor. Stoichiometric models are less accurate than kinetic-base

3. Effects of oxygen transfer coefficient on dihydroxyacetone production from crude glycerol
Abstract The principal objective of this study was to evaluate the kinetics of dihydroxyacetone production by Gluconobacter frateurii CGMCC 5397 under different oxygen volumetric mass transfer coefficient (kLa) conditions in submerged bioreactors using biodiesel-derived crude glycerol as the carbon source. kLa is a key fermentation parameter for the producti

4. BIOHYDROGEN FROM CHEESE WHEY TREATMENT IN AN AnSBBR: ACHIEVING PROCESS STABILITY
AbstractAn AnSBBR (anaerobic sequencing batch reactor containing biomass immobilized on an inert support) with liquid phase recirculation, containing a 3.5 L working volume, treated 1.5 L of cheese whey wastewater in 3 and 4 h cycles at 30 ºC to produce biohydrogen. From startup the bioreactor presented process instability. To overcome this problem the foll

5. HSF-1, HIF-1and HSP90 expression on recombinant Pichia pastoris under fed-batch fermentation
Pichia pastoris is a methylotrophic yeast used as an efficient expression system for heterologous protein production as compared to other expression systems. Considering that every cell must respond to environmental changes to survive and differentiate, determination of endogenous protein related to heat stress responses and hypoxia, it would necessary to es

6. Modeling of an industrial process of pleuromutilin fermentation using feed-forward neural networks
This work investigates the use of artificial neural networks in modeling an industrial fermentation process of Pleuromutilin produced by Pleurotus mutilus in a fed-batch mode. Three feed-forward neural network models characterized by a similar structure (five neurons in the input layer, one hidden layer and one neuron in the output layer) are constructed and

7. Semi-scale production of PHAs from waste frying oil by Pseudomonas fluorescens S48
The present study aimed at developing a strategy to improve the volumetric production of PHAs by Pseudomonas fluorescens S48 using waste frying oil (WFO) as the sole carbon source. For this purpose, several cultivations were set up to steadily improve nutrients supply to attain high cell density and high biopolymer productivity. The production of PHAs was ex

9. Avaliação da utilização do dióxido de carbono proveniente da fermentação alcoólica no cultivo de Spirulina (Arthrospira) platensis: uso simultâneo de nitrato de sódio e sulfato de amônio como fontes de nitrogênio em fotobiorreator aberto / Evaluation of the use of carbon dioxide from alcoholic fermentation on Spirulina (Arthrospira) platensis cultivation: simultaneous use of sodium nitrate and ammonium sulphate as nitrogen sources in open photobioreactor
The main objective of this work was the evaluation of the potential of using carbon dioxide from alcoholic fermentation on Spirulina (Arthrospira) platensis cultivation, aiming to prove the feasibility of applying an effluent gas in the production of high added-value microbial biomass. In order to do so, the cyanobacterium was cultivated in laboratorial-scal

10. Production of pullulan by a thermotolerant Aureobasidium pullulans strain in non-stirred fed batch fermentation process
Total 95 isolates of Aureobasidium pullulans were isolated from different flowers and leaves samples, out of which 11 thermotolerant strains produced pullulan. One thermotolerant non-melanin pullulan producing strain, designated as RG-5, produced highest pullulan (37.1±1.0 g/l) at 42ºC, pH 5.5 in 48h of incubation with 3% sucrose and 0.5% ammonium sulphate
