1. New Strategies in Enantioselective Hydrogenation on Supported Transition Metal Catalyst: Effects of Metal Sintering and Support Swelling
The effect of noble metal catalysts supported on an ionic exchange resin for the enantioselective hydrogenation of ethyl pyruvate to ethyl lactate was studied. High activity and moderate enantioselectivity levels were obtained. Pt was the best enantioselective metallic phase, followed by Pd and Au; Rh was the less enantioselective metallic phase. The effect

3. Production nd control of the acrylic acid ester synthesis through lactic acid fermentation / Produção e controle da síntese do éster de ácido acrílico através da fermentação do ácido láctico
The continuous development of fermentative processes of low cost and highly efficient to organic acids production to create new opportunities for chemical production from renewable raw materials. The combination of the low cost of lactic acid production from sugarcane fermentation, reduction oil dependence and biocatalysts use, make the production of acrylat

4. Comparação de técnicas de determinação de ésteres em cachaça
An analytical comparison of three different techniques for quantitative profile of esters in cachaça is reported. The Ministério da Agricultura Pecuária e Abastecimento (MAPA) recommends the use of GC/FID or volumetry. Despite being laborious and lacking in chemical speciation, the volumetric technique for total ester content shows to be appropriate, repr

5. Increased mutagenesis mediated by cloned plasmid CAM-OCT genes: potential for expanding substrate ranges of Pseudomonas spp.
Twenty-five kilobases of Pseudomonas plasmid CAM-OCT DNA encoding a DNA repair gene(s) was cloned into the broad-host-range vector pVK100. The presence of the cloned genes increased the isolation frequency of Pseudomonas putida derivatives capable of using ethyl lactate or 3-methyl-3-buten-1-ol as their carbon source 15- and 8-fold, respectively, after UV ir

6. Carbohydrate Metabolism in Spirochaeta stenostrepta
The pathways of carbohydrate metabolism in Spirochaeta stenostrepta, a free-living, strictly anaerobic spirochete, were studied. The organism fermented glucose to ethyl alcohol, acetate, lactate, CO2, and H2. Assays of enzymatic activities in cell extracts, and determinations of radioactivity distribution in products formed from 14C-labeled glucose indicated

7. Pathways of Anaerobic Acetate Utilization in Escherichia coli and Aerobacter cloacae
Acetate-1-14C was added to anaerobic glucose-fermenting cultures of Escherichia coli and Aerobacter cloacae. In the E. coli culture, lactate formation occurred late in the fermentation, when the rate of production of formate and acetate had decreased. The occurrence of acetate label in the lactate indicated formation of pyruvate from acetyl-coenzyme A (CoA)

8. Fermentation of Glucose, Lactose, Galactose, Mannitol, and Xylose by Bifidobacteria
For six strains of Bifidobacterium bifidum (Lactobacillus bifidus), fermentation balances of glucose, lactose, galactose, mannitol, and xylose were determined. Products formed were acetate, l(+)-lactate, ethyl alcohol, and formate. l(+)-Lactate dehydrogenase of all strains studied was found to have an absolute requirement for fructose-1,6-diphosphate. The ph

9. Respiratory Activity of the Mycelium of Eremothecium ashbyii
The respiratory activity of the mycelium of Eremothecium ashbyii from submerged cultures was manometrically determined at different stages of its development and the results were statistically analyzed. The experiments were performed in a manner designed to diminish the endogenous respiration without affecting the response to the addition of an exogenous sub

10. Glucose-induced Crypticity Toward Succinate Metabolism in Saccharomyces lactis
Saccharomyces lactis grown on glucose adapted very slowly to growth on succinate. This initial inability of glucose-grown cells to grow on succinate was paralleled by their inability to oxidize succinate. The possibility that repression by glucose of respiratory chain components was responsible for these observations was examined. Glucose-grown cells were ab

11. Identification and analysis of a Saccharomyces cerevisiae copper homeostasis gene encoding a homeodomain protein.
Yeast metallothionein, encoded by the CUP1 gene, and its copper-dependent transcriptional activator ACE1 play a key role in mediating copper resistance in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Using an ethyl methanesulfonate mutant of a yeast strain in which CUP1 and ACE1 were deleted, we isolated a gene, designated CUP9, which permits yeast cells to grow at high concen

12. Sequence-dependent cytotoxicity of second-generation oligonucleotides
In this study, we have examined the potential of second-generation antisense chimeric 2′-O-(2-methoxy)ethyl/DNA phosphorothioate oligonucleotides (ONs) to affect cell growth through non-antisense mechanisms. Evaluation of a series of ONs demonstrated that only a small number were cytotoxic at concentrations close to those required for antisense activity. T
