2. Detection of the mecA gene and identification of Staphylococcus directly from blood culture bottles by multiplex polymerase chain reaction
ABSTRACT Introduction: Staphylococcus spp. – both S. aureus, including methicillin-resistant strains (MRSA) and coagulase negative staphylococci (CoNS) – are relevant agents of healthcare-associated infections. Therefore, the rapid recognition of MRSA and methicillin-resistant CoNS from blood stream infections is critically important for patient managem

3. Microbiology of Tracheal Secretions: What to Expect with Children and Adolescents with Tracheostomies
Abstract Introduction People with tracheostomies exhibit a higher risk of colonization of the lower respiratory tract, acute tracheitis and pneumonia. Despite this, the culture of tracheal secretions is not a routine inmost hospitals, and sometimes empiric therapy is based on personal experience, which is not an ideal situation. Objective To recognize th

4. Diagnostic-driven antifungal therapy in neutropenic patients using the D-index and serial serum galactomannan testing
Abstract Introduction Invasive mold disease is an important complication of patients with hematologic malignancies, and is associated with high mortality. A diagnostic-driven approach has been an alternative to the classical empiric antifungal therapy. In the present study we tested an algorithm that incorporated risk stratification using the D-index, seria

5. Invasive infection due to Saprochaete capitata in a young patient with hematological malignancies
We report a case of invasive infection due to Saprochaete capitata in a patient with hematological malignancies after chemotherapy treatment and empiric antifungal therapy with caspofungin. Although severely immunocompromised the patient survived been treated with amphotericin B lipid complex associated with voriconazole.

6. Ecology of blood stream infection and antibiotic resistance in intensive care unit at a tertiary care hospital in North India
OBJECTIVE: To analyse the prevalent microorganisms and their antimicrobial resistance among intensive care unit patients in a tertiary care centre in New Delhi. METHODS: A retrospective study of all consecutive blood cultures from various intensive care unit patients in the hospital during four years (January 2008 to December 2011). Antibiotic consumpt

7. Emergence of clonal complex 5 (CC5) methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) isolates susceptible to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole in a Brazilian hospital
In this study, genotyping techniques including staphylococcal chromosomal cassette mec (SCCmec) typing, pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), multilocus sequence typing (MLST) and restriction-modification tests were used to compare the molecular characteristics of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) isolates recovered at two times within a

8. Use of antifungal drugs in hematology
Invasive fungal disease represents a major complication in hematological patients. Antifungal agents are frequently used in hematologic patients for different purposes. In neutropenic patients, antifungal agents may be used as prophylaxis, as empiric or preemptive therapy, or to treat an invasive fungal disease that has been diagnosed. The hematologist must

9. CaracterizaÃÃo fenotÃpica e genotÃpica, sensibilidade a antimicrobianos e detecÃÃo de gene de virulÃncia de cepas clÃnicas e ambientais de Burkholderia pseudomallei. / Genotyping, antimicrobial susceptibility and detection of virulence genes of clinical and environmental strains of Burkholderia pseudomallei isolated in Ceara.
Melioidosis is a serious infectious disease caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei, a Gram negative rod, commonly found in soil and water. The disease is endemic in Southeastern Asia and hyperendemic in Northern Australia. Despite the initiation of empiric therapy, mortality remains at 21% in patients with melioidosis in Australia. In Brazil, it is considered a

11. Vulvovaginal candidiasis in Mato Grosso, Brazil: pregnancy status, causative species and drugs tests
Causative agent in majority of VVC is Candida albicans, but infection due to non-C. albicans is common. Use of empiric antifungal therapy in Brazil due to syndromic management of vulvovaginitis could act as risk factor for increase resistance among VVC causative agents. From Mato Grosso patients, 160 with culture-proved among 404 women who had clinical sympt

12. Impact of macrolide therapy on mortality of HIV-infected patients with community-acquired pneumonia in a tertiary teaching hospital
BACKGROUND: Bacterial pneumonia is one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality in patients infected by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The main objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of macrolide therapy in combination with a beta-lactam based empiric regimen for inpatients with community-acquired pneumonia and HIV. METHODS: This is
