1. The Middle Ages Contributions to Cardiovascular Medicine
Abstract The historical period called the Middle Ages, a long interval between the 5th and the 15th centuries, is still commonly known as the Dark Ages, especially in the area of health sciences. In the last decades, this "classic" view of the Middle Ages has been gradually modified with advances in historiographical studies and the history of science. Durin

2. Identification of Albizia lebbeck seed coat chitin-binding vicilins (7S globulins) with high toxicity to the larvae of the bruchid Callosobruchus maculatus
Seed coat is a specialized maternal tissue that interfaces the embryo and the external environment during embryogenesis, dormancy and germination. In addition, it is the first defensive barrier against penetration by pathogens and herbivores. Here we show that Albizia lebbeck seed coat dramatically compromises the oviposition, eclosion and development of the

3. Life cycle of Triatoma ryckmani (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) in the laboratory, feeding patterns in nature and experimental infection with Trypanosoma cruzi
A cohort initiated with 121 eggs, yielding 105 first instar nymphs (eclosion rate: 86.78%), allowed us to observe the entire life cycle of Triatoma ryckmani under laboratory conditions (24ºC and 62% relative humidity), by feeding them on anesthetized hamsters. It was possible to obtain 62 adults and the cycle from egg to adult took a mean of 359.69 days wit

4. Performance de Ceratitis capitata Wiedemann (Diptera: Tephritidae) em frutos: comparação de duas populações criadas em laboratório
This study evaluated the influence of two fruits hosts (orange and papaya) on biological and behavioral parameters of two populations of Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann) reared under laboratory conditions. One of these populations has been reared under laboratory conditions by 25 years without introduction of wild flies (Lab-pop), while the other has been main

5. External morphology of Cotesia flavipes (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) during larval development
Cotesia flavipes (Cameron, 1891) (Hymenoptera) is a gregarious endoparasitoid used in applied biological control against Diatraea saccharalis (Fabricius, 1794) (Lepidoptera). In this study, we characterize the larval external morphology and the number of instars of C. flavipes. Parasitized larvae of D. saccharalis were sampled from the 1st to the 10th day af

6. Efeito de fungos entomopatogênicos na mortalidade de adultos, oviposição e eclosão de larvas de Aedes aegypti / Effects of entomopathogenic fungi on the adult mortality, oviposition and larval eclosion of Aedes aegypti.

Achatina fulica Bowdich, 1822 is an african snail that is invasive in different parts of the world, being characterized mainly by its high adaptability. Our objective was to evaluate the influence of abiotic factors, such as temperature and substrate, on the egg eclosion, adult and juvenile reaction to different abiotics factors, and the resistance of A. ful

8. Parasitoides larva-pupa de Hylesia metabus Cramer (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae) en la región nororiental de Venezuela: un caso de control Biológico Natural
The moth Hylesia metabus Cramer is considered a public health pest due to the release of urticating hairs by adult females during periodic invasions of towns and villages, producing dermatits in humans. We reported natural parasitism levels for this moth during six life cycles in two localities in northeastern Venezuela. Pupae were collected in the field and

10. Impact of moisture on survival of Aedes aegypti eggs and ovicidal activity of Metarhizium anisopliae under laboratory conditions
The effect of relative humidity (43%, 75%, 86% and > 98%) on Aedes aegypti eggs treated with Metarhizium anisopliae or water only was tested for up to a six months exposure at 25ºC. Survival of larvae inside eggs was clearly affected by the lowest humidity (43%) tested, and eclosion diminished at all humidities after increasing periods of exposure. M. aniso

11. Aspectos da ecologia reprodutiva de Podocnemis expansa, Podocnemis sextuberculata e Podocnemis unifilis (Testudines, Podocnemididae) na Reserva Biológica do Abufari, Amazonas, Brasil.
The present dissertation investigated about behavior microhabitat selection by tartaruga (Podocnemis expansa), iaçá (P. sextuberculata) and tracajá (P. unifilis) in Abufari Biological Reserve, Amazonas. Were monitored the turtles reproductive periods (August - December) of the 1998-2004 years. The first specie at nesting was iaçá, after tartaruga and la

The aim of the work was to evaluate the effect of different protein and lipid sources of animal and vegetable origin on the reproductive performance of black catfish Rhamdia quelen females. Three experiments were accomplished with duration of 90 days each, divided in three phases: Phase I, Reproducers feeding; phase II, Induced reproduction and eggs and larv
