2. Evaluation of Fracture Toughness of Ultraviolet-Irradiated Polycarbonate Using the Essential Work of Fracture Method
The essential work of fracture (EWF) method provides useful parameters to characterize the fracture toughness of polymers exposed to degrading environments under conditions associated with plane-stress state of failure. Exposure of polymeric engineering materials to ultraviolet (UV) radiation may produce macromolecular changes that impair their fracture toug

3. The role of ClpX in erythropoietic protoporphyria
ABSTRACT Hemoglobin is an essential biological component of human physiology and its production in red blood cells relies upon proper biosynthesis of heme and globin protein. Disruption in the synthesis of these precursors accounts for a number of human blood disorders found in patients. Mutations in genes encoding heme biosynthesis enzymes are associated wi

4. Purification and characterization of cold-adapted beta-agarase from an Antarctic psychrophilic strain
An extracellular β-agarase was purified from
Pseudoalteromonas sp. NJ21, a Psychrophilic agar-degrading bacterium isolated from Antarctic Prydz Bay sediments. The purified agarase (Aga21) revealed a single band on sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, with an apparent molecular weight of 80 kDa. The optimum pH and teBraz. J. 5. Thermotolerant and mesophylic fungi from sugarcane bagasse and their prospection for biomass-degrading enzyme production
Nineteen fungi and seven yeast strains were isolated from sugarcane bagasse piles from an alcohol plant located at Brazilian Cerrado and identified up to species level on the basis of the gene sequencing of 5.8S-ITS and 26S ribosomal DNA regions. Four species were identified:

6. Configuration Study of Structurally Integrated Thermal Protection Systems for a Sub-Orbital Platform
ABSTRACT: The atmospheric hypersonic flight of sub-orbital and space vehicles generates aerodynamic heating and high wall heat fluxes, inducing high temperatures on the vehicle's structures and affecting their mechanical behavior, besides degrading the operation of board equipment. Furthermore, since payload preservation is always mandatory, the use of effic

7. Adsorção de o-xileno em argila fluidgel organofílica em fase gasosa / Adsorption of o-xylene onto organoclay fluidgel in gas phase
The industrial growth allied to use of petroleum products generate numerous volatile organic compounds (VOC) that are continuously emitted to the atmosphere, degrading air quality and causing serious problems to human health and environment. Among the VOC, the so-called BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene, and xylene), are the most important in terms of to

8. Clonagem e estudos de expressão de enzimas do fungo filamentoso Trichoderma harzianum IOC-3844 envolvidas na degradação de biomassa
The plant biomass is a large-scale available resource and one of its more important applications is the second-generation ethanol production. However, the enzyme cost is one of the biggest barriers for economically viable ethanol from biomass. Therefore, it is important to identify fungal strains that can produce high concentrations of plant biomass-degradin

9. Estudos das características técnicas e operacionais das galerias de águas pluviais como subsídios para gestão patrimonial e estabelecimento de diretrizes para projetos de sistemas de drenagem urbana
The purpose of this work is to study the emergence and evolution of pathological manifestations in urban stormwater channels and relate them to technical and operational characteristics of concrete structures so that plans for urban drainage systems management are developed, as well as new concepts for stormwater channel projects. The main reference is the D

12. Evaluation of microorganisms with sulfidogenic metabolic potential under anaerobic conditions
The aim of this work was to identify groups of microorganisms that are capable of degrading organic matter utilizing sulfate as an electron acceptor. The assay applied for this purpose consisted of running batch reactors and monitoring lactate consumption, sulfate reduction and sulfide production. A portion of the lactate added to the batch reactors was cons
