1. Unilateral absence of vas deferens: prevalence among 23,013 men seeking vasectomy
ABSTRACT Purpose: To determine the prevalence of unilateral absence of vas deferens (UAVD) in men with both testes seeking vasectomy. Materials and Methods: Computerized charts of 23,013 patients encountered between January 1994 and December 2013 in one university hospital and two community clinics of Quebec City, Canada, were searched. Pre-vasectomy consu

This thesis analyzes the evolution of fashion and the influences that have suffered and induced on the society of consumption in the 1960s. After surveying of the conditions that led to the development of fashion until the 1960s, illustrated by the evolution of design and ways of production and the raise of an important new category of consumer the youth -,

4. The mental handicap subject and the paradoxes body / O sujeito deficiente mental e os paradoxos do corpo

5. A low-mass neutron flux monitor for the n _TOF facility at CERN
A small-mass system has been developed for monitoring the flux of neutrons with energy up to 1 MeV at the new time-of-flight facility at CERN, n_TOF. The monitor is based on a thin Mylar foil with a 6Li deposit, placed in the neutron beam, and an array of Silicon detectors, placed outside the beam, for detecting the products of the 6Li(n, alpha)³H reaction.

7. Purification and characterization of a mammalian endo-exonuclease.
An endo-exonuclease has been purified from cultured monkey (CV-1) cells. The enzyme which was purified to near homogeneity to be a 65 kDa monomeric protein. The single-strand DNase activity is endonucleolytic and nonprocessive, whereas the double-strand DNase activity is exonucleolytic and processive. The enzyme was also found to have RNase activity using po

8. A cooperative oxygen-binding hemoglobin from Mycobacterium tuberculosis
Two putative hemoglobin genes, glbN and glbO, were recently discovered in the complete genome sequence of Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv. Here, we show that the glbN gene encodes a dimeric hemoglobin (HbN) that binds oxygen cooperatively with very high affinity (P50 = 0.013 mmHg at 20°C) because of a fast combination (25 μM−1⋅s−1) and a slow dissoc

9. Suppression of mutations in the core of the Tetrahymena ribozyme by spermidine, ethanol and by substrate stabilization.
We have previously described a collection of mutations in conserved residues of the core of the Tetrahymena self-splicing intron. Most of these single base substitutions have less than 10% of the activity of their parental intron derivative [Couture, S., et al., (1990) J. Mol. Biol., 215, 345-358]. We examined the effect of two agents known to stabilize RNA

10. p56lck-independent activation and tyrosine phosphorylation of p72syk by T-cell antigen receptor/CD3 stimulation.
Activation of resting T lymphocytes by ligands to the T-cell antigen receptor (TCR)/CD3 complex is initiated by rapid tyrosine phosphorylation of cellular proteins. Protein-tyrosine kinases (PTKs) of the src family are known to be important, but the mechanism of their recruitment and their interactions with PTKs of other families are incompletely understood.

11. Studies on the trigeminal antidromic vasodilatation and plasma extravasation in the rat.
Antidromic stimulation of sensory peripheral branches of the trigeminal system (mental nerve) led to cutaneous vasodilatation and increased vascular permeability in rats anaesthetized with urethane. The antidromic vasodilatation observed in intact animals was not altered by decentralization or sympathectomy. Both antidromic vasodilatation and neurogenic plas

12. Structural Analysis and Evidence for Dynamic Emergence of Bacillus anthracis S-Layer Networks
Surface layers (S-layers), which form the outermost layers of many Bacteria and Archaea, consist of protein molecules arranged in two-dimensional crystalline arrays. Bacillus anthracis, a gram-positive, spore-forming bacterium, responsible for anthrax, synthesizes two abundant surface proteins: Sap and EA1. Regulatory studies showed that EA1 and Sap appear s
