13. On the behavior of upwind schemes applied to three-dimensional supersonic and hypersonic cold gas flow simulations of aerospace configurations.
The present work describes the efforts towards the implementation of upwind schemes to simulate supersonic and hypersonic cold gÃs flows. The class of flux vector splitting schemes has been chosen, and the particular methods implemented are the van Leer and Liou schemes. Results for different freestream Mach numbers and mesh topologies are discussed in orde

14. Estudo in silico de genes que codificam fatores de transcriÃÃo responsivos Ãseca, salinidade e congelamento nos genomas do eucalipto, cana e arroz
Abiotic stresses are the most responsable for causing changes in plant growth and development. The plants, in counterpart, make use of a variety of responses in order to maintain their metabolic and physiological processes. One of the main plants responses to environmental conditions alterations is the additional regulation of expression. Moreover, the biosy

15. The biological effects of high-pressure gas on the yeast transcriptome
The aim of the present study was to examine the feasibility of DNA microarray technology in an attempt to construct an evaluation system for determining gas toxicity using high-pressure conditions, as it is well known that pressure increases the concentration of a gas. As a first step, we used yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) as the indicator organism and an

17. PRECONDITIONING OF ORGAN DONORS WITH LOW LEVELS OF CARBON MONOXIDE REDUCES GRAFT IMMUNOGENICITY AND IMPROVES LONGTERM ALLOGRAFT FUNCTION
Background: Chronic rejection remains the major obstacle for successful transplantation, and to date there is no effective treatment. Events occurring prior to organ transplantation such as brain death, harvesting procedure, and ischemia-reperfusion injury lead to unspecific inflammatory damages danger signals - that increase graft immunogenicity and reduce

18. Effect of sequential heat and cold shocks on nuclear phenotypes of the blood-sucking insect, Panstrongylus megistus (Burmeister) (Hemiptera, Reduviidae)
Thermal shocks induce changes in the nuclear phenotypes that correspond to survival (heterochromatin decondensation, nuclear fusion) or death (apoptosis, necrosis) responses in the Malpighian tubules of Panstrongylus megistus. Since thermal tolerance increased survival and molting rate in this species following sequential shocks, we investigated whether chan

19. Effect of Sequential Cold Shocks on Survival and Molting Rate in Triatoma infestans Klug
The survival and molting incidence in Triatoma infestans, a vector of Chagas disease, were investigated following sequential shocks at 0ºC in fifth instar nymphs under moderate fasting and full nutritional conditions. The shocks were separated by intervals of 8 h and 24 h at 30ºC. The results indicated that in terms of insect survival, T. infestans is tole

20. Changes in nuclear phenotypes following cold shock in Panstrongylus megistus (Burmeister)
The nuclear phenotypes of Malpighian tubule epithelial cells of 5th instar male nymphs of the blood-sucking insect Panstrongylus megistus were studied immediately after a short (1 h) cold shock at 0ºC, and 10 and 30 days later. The objective was to compare the responses to a cold shock with those known to occur after hyperthermia in order to provide insight

21. The role of the 5'-end untranslated region of the mRNA for CspA, the major cold-shock protein of Escherichia coli, in cold-shock adaptation.
During cellular adaptation to low temperature, Escherichia coli transiently synthesizes the major cold-shock protein CspA. It was found that adaptation to cold shock is blocked when the 143-base sequence of the 5' untranslated region (5' UTR) of the cspA mRNA is overproduced. The overproduction of this UTR at 15 degrees C caused the synthesis of not only Csp

22. Heat shock protection against cold stress of Drosophila melanogaster.
Heat shock protein synthesis can be induced during recovery from cold treatment of Drosophila melanogaster larvae. Survival of larvae after a cold treatment is dramatically improved by a mild heat shock just before the cold shock. The conditions which induce tolerance to cold are similar to those which confer tolerance to heat.

23. Exploring the Temperature-Stress Metabolome of Arabidopsis1[w]
Metabolic profiling analyses were performed to determine metabolite temporal dynamics associated with the induction of acquired thermotolerance in response to heat shock and acquired freezing tolerance in response to cold shock. Low-Mr polar metabolite analyses were performed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Eighty-one identified metabolites and 4

24. Selective mRNA Degradation by Polynucleotide Phosphorylase in Cold Shock Adaptation in Escherichia coli
Upon cold shock, Escherichia coli cell growth transiently stops. During this acclimation phase, specific cold shock proteins (CSPs) are highly induced. At the end of the acclimation phase, their synthesis is reduced to new basal levels, while the non-cold shock protein synthesis is resumed, resulting in cell growth reinitiation. Here, we report that polynucl
