1. Stability Analyses by HPLC-MS of Guanitoxin Isolated from Sphaerospermopsis torques-reginae
Guanitoxin (GNT) is a natural organophosphate produced by some species of freshwater cyanobacteria, which inhibits the active site of acetylcholinesterase, preventing the hydrolysis of cholinesterases and consequently causing serious disturbances in the neuromuscular system. Despite having a chemical structure like synthetic organophosphates, there is still

2. Assessment of phytoplankton species in gut and feces of cultured tilapia fish in Egyptian fishponds: Implications for feeding and bloom control

3. Invasion and establishment of Ceratium furcoides (Dinophyceae) in an urban lake in Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil
ABSTRACT Ceratium furcoides has received attention due its invasive behavior in South America and consequent alterations in local phytoplankton communities. Pedalinhos Lake had been dominated by chlorophytes until 2015, when the first occurrence of this dinoflagellate was detected. In order to investigate the colonization process of this species, we monitore

4. Allelopathic effects of the aquatic macrophyte Ceratophyllum demersum L. on phytoplankton species: contrasting effects between cyanobacteria and chlorophytes

5. Behavioral alterations induced by repeated saxitoxin exposure in drinking water
Abstract Background Blooms of the saxitoxin-producing cyanobacterium Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii have been contaminating drinking water reservoirs in Brazil for many years. Although acute effects of saxitoxin intoxication are well known, chronic deleterious outcomes caused by repeated saxitoxin exposure still require further investigation. The aim of th

6. The necessity of management in a lake of the Atlantic Forest biodiversity hotspot: nitrogen levels connected to a persistent bloom of Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii
ABSTRACT Conservational studies of the threatened Atlantic Forest biome are frequently restricted to terrestrial ecosystems. We know little about the water bodies, specially considering that this biome covers the third largest system of lakes in Brazil. Some of these lakes are located inside the protected "Rio Doce State Park", but many others are found outs

7. Morpho-physiological responses of a subtropical strain of Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii (Cyanobacteria) to different light intensities
ABSTRACT The toxigenic cyanobacterium Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii previously restricted to tropical latitudes, has been increasingly reported in temperate lakes in recent decades. The causes of its biogeographical expansion are under investigation, but efficient physiological adaptation to changes in temperature and light regimes are likely to be involved

Blooms of cyanobacteria represent a public health risk due to their cyanotoxins such as microcystins. Liquid chromatography techniques to separate and quantify microcystins invariably use acetonitrile as the organic component of the mobile phase. The price and availability of acetonitrile together with its elevated toxicity encourage the validation of aceton

9. Molecular, chemical and ecotoxicological analysis of cyanobacterial blooms in lakes of Sao Paulo State / Análises moleculares, químicas e ecotoxicológicas de cianobactérias presentes em florações de lagoas do estado de São Paulo

10. The inhibitory effect of calcium on Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii (cyanobacteria) metabolism
Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii (Woloszynska) Seenaya & Subba Raju is a freshwater cyanobacterium of worldwide distribution. In the North-eastern region of Brazil many eutrophic water reservoirs are characterized by the dominance of C. raciborskii, with recurrent occurrence of blooms. These water bodies have high conductivity due to a high ionic concentration

L. fortunei (Dunker, 1857), commonly known as golden mussel comes from Southeast Asia. It might have been unintentionally introduced in our water sources through ballast water, with the first records in 1991, in Rio de la Plata, near Buenos Aires, Argentina, South America. In Brazil it was first seen in 1998, in Jacuí Delta, opposite Porto Alegre¿s harbor.
