1. Growth hormone insensitivity with immune dysfunction caused by a STAT5B mutation in the south of Brazil: evidence for a founder effect
ABSTRACT Homozygous STAT5B mutations causing growth hormone insensitivity with immune dysfunction were described in 10 patients since 2003, including two Brazilian brothers from the south of Brazil. Our objectives were to evaluate the prevalence of their STAT5B mutation in this region and to analyze the presence of a founder effect. We obtained DNA samples f

2. Ancestral association between HLA and HFE H63D and C282Y gene mutations from northwest Colombia
A significant association between HFE gene mutations and the HLA-A*03-B*07 and HLA-A*29-B*44 haplotypes has been reported in the Spanish population. It has been proposed that these mutations are probably connected with Celtic and North African ancestry, respectively. We aimed to find the possible ancestral association between HLA alleles and haplotypes assoc

3. Morphological and molecular characterization of Fusarium. solani and F. oxysporum associated with crown disease of oil palm
Crown disease (CD) is infecting oil palm in the early stages of the crop development. Previous studies showed that Fusarium species were commonly associated with CD. However, the identity of the species has not been resolved. This study was carried out to identify and characterize through morphological approaches and to determine the genetic diversity of the

4. Genetic variants and haplotypes of the UGT1A9, 1A7 and 1A1 genes in Chinese Han
In this report, we describe combined polymorphisms of the UGT1A9, UGT1A7 and UGT1A1 genes in 100 unrelated, healthy Chinese Han subjects. The functional regions of these genes were sequenced and comprehensively analyzed for genetic polymorphisms. Thirty variants were detected, including five novel forms. Tentative functional predictions indicated that a Cys

5. Estudo filogenético do gene apxIA de Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae sorotipo 5 isolados no Brasil / Phylogenetic analysis of the apxIA gene of Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, serotype 5, isolated in Brazil
The toxins produced by Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae (App) are recognized as major virulence factors found in this pathogen. Apx toxin I has strong hemolytic and cytotoxic activity, and this toxin has a high cytotoxic activity against pulmonary macrophages and neutrophils in swine. This exotoxin is produced by different serotypes, including the serotypes 1

6. Promoter region sequence differences in the A and G gamma globin genes of Brazilian sickle cell anemia patients
Fetal hemoglobin (HbF), encoded by the HBG2 and HBG1 genes, is the best-known genetic modulator of sickle cell anemia, varying dramatically in concentration in the blood of these patients. This variation is partially associated with polymorphisms located in the promoter region of the HBG2 and HBG1 genes. In order to explore known and unknown polymorphisms in

7. LEI0258 microsatellite variability and its relationship to B-F haplotypes in Brazilian (blue-egg Caipira) chickens
A total of 149 chickens from two different sources (one non-commercial, the other commercial) was tested for variability of the LEI0258 microsatellite. Fifty- three genotypes, explainable by 15 alleles, were found. There are clear allele and heterozygosity differences between the two samples. One of them was simultaneously studied for the MHC B-F haplotypes.

8. Caracterização de aspectos geneticos e imunologicos envolvidos no desenvolvimento de inibidores em hemofilia A e B / Genetic and immunologic aspects related to the development of inhibitors in hemophilia A and B

9. Influence of the polymorphisms of the α-major regulatory element HS-40 on in vitro gene expression
The α-MRE is the major regulatory element responsible for the expression of human α-like globin genes. It is genetically polymorphic, and six different haplotypes, named A to F, have been identified in some population groups from Europe, Africa and Asia and in native Indians from two Brazilian Indian tribes. Most of the mutations that constitute the α-MRE

10. Haplotypes of vitamin D modulate the circulate levels of leaf in exposed subjects / Modulação toxicogenetica das concentrações sanguineas e plasmaticas de chumbo por haplotipos do receptor da vitamina D
The Vitamin D Receptor (VDR) plays an important role in the toxicity of lead (Pb). Genetic factors, i.e polymorphisms, influence blood lead (Pb-B) concentrations in lead exposed subjects. However, only a few research studies have evaluated the effect of VDR polymorphism on the lead concentration in environmentally. Also, no studies have evaluated the combina

11. Genetic structure in two northern muriqui populations (Brachyteles hypoxanthus, Primates, Atelidae) as inferred from fecal DNA
We assessed the genetic diversity of two northern muriqui (Brachyteles hypoxanthus Primata, Atelidae) populations, the Feliciano Miguel Abdala population (FMA, n = 108) in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais (19°44' S, 41°49' W) and the Santa Maria de Jetibá population (SMJ, n = 18) in the Brazilian state of Espírito Santo (20°01' S, 40°44' W). 12. Influencia dos polimorfismos do elemento regulatorio maior dos genes do cluster da globina alfa humana na expressão genica in vitro / Influence of the polymorphisms of the alpha-major regulatory element (alfa-MRE) on in vitro gene expression
