RESUMO

This study was carried out at the estuaries of Carrapicho and Botafogo rivers, ItamaracÃ, Pernambuco, to access the zooplankton biodiversity and indicators species of environmental quality. Sampling were done from August/2003 to August/2004 during ebb tide, along two transects: one in the Botafogo river estuary (gradient of pollution) and another in the Carrapicho river estuary (control), where were fixed four stations. A plankton net 300 μm mesh size was hauled at surface during three minutes. The collected material was packed in bottles and it was preserved in formol at 4%. Water samples for salinity, temperature, dissolved oxygen, DBO, pH and nutrients were taken simultaneously with the zooplankton samples. In laboratory samples were weighed to obtain the plankton biomass through wet weight. Thirty-one taxa were registered for the Carrapicho river estuary, which were dominants: Acartia (Odontocartia) lilljeborgi Giesbrecht, 1892 (90,51%), Lucifer faxoni (zoea) Borradaile, 1915 (80,51%), Temora turbinata (74,67%) Dana, 1849. Twenty-four taxa were registered for the Botafogo river estuary, which were dominants: Brachyura (zoea) Latreille, 1803 (83,33%), Acartia (Odontocartia) lilljeborgi Giesbrecht, 1892 (75,00%). The presence of larvae of the family Spionidae Polychaeta is an indication of organic pollution inside the estuary of the river Botafogo. Already the larvae of the family Syllidae were extremely sensitive to pollution, not being recorded in the estuary of the river Botafogo. Nematoda was related to increased nutrient salts, probably due to high organic pollution and eutrophication of the conditions of the area. The biomass values in the Carrapicho river estuary varied of 1,12 mg. m-3 to 2.211,00 mg. m-3. The biomass values in the Botafogo river estuary varied of 0,12 mg. m-3 to 3.476,20 mg. m-3, demonstrating that the Carrapicho river estuary is more productive that the Botafogo river estuary. Average species diversity in the Carrapicho river estuary was 2,28 bits.ind-1 and average evnness was low (<0,5). Average species diversity in the Botafogo river estuary was 1,91 bits.ind-1 and average evenness was low (<0,5), indicating instability of community in two areas
