RESUMO

The development of anthropogenic activities without an adequate planning has provided the degradation of waters quality, compromising the several uses of this natural resource, as its utilization for recreational use. In this context, the county of Carrancas, located in the southern area of Minas Gerais state, possesses various natural attractions, such as several waterfalls, among them the FumaÃa Waterfall, located in the basin of Carrancas River, being commonly visited by tourists. However, the inadequate destination of effluents has caused contamination of the waters, putting in risk the population that gets in touch with them. Intending to evaluate the effects of the human interventions over the waters quality, this work has as objectives: classify the soil covering in the basin under study; monitor the physiochemical and microbiological water quality, applying the index of water quality (IQA) in the basin of the Carrancas River; diagnose the possible pollution sources that interfere in the waters quality, through the individual analysis of monitored parameters; evaluate the viability of using a portable kit of water analyses, as alternative tool in monitoring programs; and evaluate the water quality for recreational use in the FumaÃa Waterfall. For the evaluation of the waters quality, three sampling points were defined in the Carrancas River stream bed: upstream and downstream of the urban area of Carrancas, and in the FumaÃa Waterfall. In these points, besides the nine parameters of IQA, the levels of ammonia and the outflow were measured. The predominant class of soil in the basin corresponded to the pastures, occupying 61,80% of the area, while the urban area has shown the smallest representation, with 0,77%. The results of IQA suit in the bad and medium quality bands and the worst values were found after the release of the Carrancas urban wastewaters. Among the evaluated parameters in the monitoring program, just the pH levels, total phosphorus and fecal coliforms came in nonconformity with the established legal limits. The pH values can be associated to the natural characteristics of the area, in function of the organic matter concentration in the waters. The levels of total Phosphorus and fecal coliforms are possibly related to the release of domestic effluents, besides the interference of the agricultural activity. The use of the Ecokit for monitoring some physiochemical parameters of water quality came as a very useful alternative to identify the quality conditions of certain hydric body, in function of its low cost and practicalness. However, the method came inadequate for the evaluation of some parameters as total phosphorus, for not including in its reading bands, the established limit for the legislation. The FumaÃa Waterfall has shown conditions of inappropriate recreational use along the monitoring, emphasizing the need of signalization of the risks offered to the swimmers in the place, until new evaluations of water quality are made, or corrective measures are adopted, as the creation a sewers treatment station for the county.
