RESUMO

This work is a case study centered around the subjective experience of unemployed youth in the city of Camaragibe, Pernambuco. Research is based on semi-structured interviews with male and female youths 18-24 years who have completed high school. This interdisciplinary study incorporates contributions from Social Work, Psychology, Sociology, Economics, as well as the Psychodynamics of Work. Research examines the direct effects of socio-political and economic conditions on the lives of the youths, and the resulting obstacles on their participation in the labor market, particularly in light of requirements associated with experience and competitiveness. Violence and criminality here are seen as direct results of unemployment. Regarding differences based on gender, the home is seen as the place for women, including the place of work, while men are seen as having a greater advantage in the labor market (both formal and informal). Females feel more trapped than males, whereas males feel more pressure from families than females. This pressure is related to demands for financial support from family members, as well as the desire for independence. From the perspective of the âsubjective experienceâ, the research identified suffering based on social and economic conditions, particularly fear of the future due to the lack of financial security and access to material goods. The youths interviewed expressed feelings of lack of independence, freedom and of more responsibilities. A central conflict exists between the will of the other, due to obstacles to participation, and the desire of the subject, essentially the desire to work. Feelings such as lack of ability, anger, and futility appear in the interviews and reflect what is a depressive experience among the youths. They also feel impotence, vulnerability, fragility, lack of confidence, fear, and frustration. These feelings are intimately related to emotional stability and personal fulfillment, and to corresponding ideas, aspirations, and desires. From a more general perspective, the thesis points to the absence of public and social policies directed at unemployed youth (male and female). This is related to the prevailing culture of individualization of blame for being unemployed. In other words, unemployment is seen as a problem of the employability of the subject, rather than a âsocial questionâ related to the structural problems of capitalist production
