RESUMO

The present study aimed to know the main perceptions of the elderly about ageism and the aging process and how the factors articulated to the spirituality influenced their experiences. Using semi-structured interviews with six elderly, between 66 and 79 years of age, we investigated general aspects of their life regarding the current stage and the spiritual dimension. The data of the research was submitted to the qualitative method of Thematic Analysis. The analysis of the interviews resulted in the definition of two thematic categories: " To perceive old" and " The meaning of the spirituality for the elderly". The first one, refers to the main experiences and perceptions of the elderly towards ageism whereas the second, refers to the understanding of the spirituality. The results indicate that ageism was recognized as a natural part of the vital cycle, marked by body losses, but also by the profits for the life experiences. The experience on spirituality appears as an experience that promotes socialization, the contact with oneself and the meditation about life and death that gains emphasis during old days. The result reveals, still, that the meanings about spirituality, is tied to religion, attitudes and transcendental values considered.
