RESUMO
The use of medicinal plants in the world, and especially in South America, contributes significantly to primary health care. Several plants are used in Brazil in the form of crude extracts, infusions or plasters to treat common infectious without any scientific evidence of efficacy. In this study extracts of 5 species of plants from Amazon region were screened for their antimicrobial activity against protozoa, bacteria and fungi. This study aims improving simple methodologies that permit the screening, in biological models, concerning medicinal plant extracts that could be useful for the development of new drugs for the control of infectious diseases, among these, preferentially, the Chagas disease. All of extracts showed some degree of activity in one or more of these bioassays: Solanum cf. crinitum was active against Leishmania e Escherichia coli, Solanum jamaicense was only active against Leishmania, Solanum rugosum was active against all of the screened species, Surucucaína was active against Leishmania and partially active against Trypanosoma cruzi, E. coli and against the fungi Peniccilium fellutanum, Cipura paludosa was active against T. cruzi and P. fellutanum. In the second part of this study, eluates of the C. paludosa plant were screened against al of the stages of T. cruzi. Only the CHCl3 eluate showed trypanocidal activity more than 80% against epimastigote, trypomastigote and intracellular amastigote forms of T. cruzi. The viability of the hosted cells was also analyzed and significant mortality to the CHCl3 eluate used concentrations was not found. In conclusion, the data suggested that in the context of the efforts to improve the therapy of infectious diseases, extracts of plants could be a source of new drugs with high activity and low toxicity.
