RESUMO

Nonrenewable energetic sources include essentially oil, natural gas and coal, the later having estimated worldwide reserves for more than 250 after the exhaustion of the other sources. The price policy for natural gas in Brazil has made attractive its substitution as a complementary source in steel plants by coal itself, whose prices are more stable. In this context, the present work is aimed at the better usage of mineral coal in integrated steel plants where a pulverized coal injection system is available. The basic proposal is to replace part of the natural gas through the combustion of pulverized coal in rotary kilns. This can be done keeping the present facilities and operating conditions of the existing plant. We discuss the increase of the pulverized coal production, the pneumatic transportation system and the associated energy consumption. A preliminary cost analysis indicates that the proposal is quite viable and deserves a more detailed study including gaseous emission evaluate
