RESUMO

This is a case study developed with a group of small-scale farmers that had been obliged to move due to the construction of the Salto Caxias Hydroelectric Power Plant. 52 small agricultural communities lived on the spot where the power plant is currently located, whose schooling needs were met by precarious rural schools, semi-isolated and with multi-level classrooms, producing poor pedagogic and social results. For the farmers in these communities now living in resettlements, however, this type of school is no longer satisfactory. The possibility of life change has altered the agriculturists? expectations regarding the school?s function in the community, so that having a ?rich man?s? school in the resettlement has become a ?dream? they want to see come true. To understand the reasons that made these agriculturists change their expectations regarding the school?s role and to understand how this ?dream? is defined to the resettled communities is the central goal of this study.
