Um estudo sobre os aspectos simbÃlicos da comida em idosos com restriÃÃes alimentares

RESUMO

Direct or indirectly food is associated to the more prevalence diseases in elderly people. The presence of sickness in this stage of life, requires feeding restrictions. Hoping to reach a longer and healthier life, elderly try to change their eating habits, a very difficult task in this stage of life mainly due to the strong symbolic meaning that food represents. Food has not only the meaning of essential nutrition for survival, but mainly something that has a subjective, social and cultural significance suggesting a profound symbolic significance. The objective of this study is to analyze the participation of symbolic aspects of elderâs nutrition, who have alimentary restrictions. For this purpose, a qualitative research was adopted. For data collection, the semi structural interview with elderly people over than 60 years old who were subject to food restrictions was used. All persons interviewed belonged to the Project âO idoso em sua comunidadeâ (Older people in their community) sponsored by âNÃcleo de Estudos e Pesquisa da Terceira Idadeâ - NEPTI of University of Brasilia - UNB and were residents in BrasÃlia. Interviews were analyzed with the help of software Alceste. This study has shown that the symbolic aspects of food are connected with the experiences lived by elderly persons. Through food, they revive their history and return to the past. Food is impregnated with affection, pleasure, happiness and sociability. Through this study it becomes clear that food has a symbolic content that must be known and interpreted by professionals acting in the area of Gerontology
