RESUMO

This work is an observational study of blocking in the Southern Hemisphere, for the period 1975-1979. The region east of Australia is found to be the most important region of the Southern Hemisphere for the formation of blocking. The Central Pacific Ocean is another important area with a maximum of occurence in summer This region has not previously. been studied due to the lack of data. In the region of South America, autumn .is the period of greatest occurence of blocking. The mean duration of blocking in this region, is less than that over Australia and over the Pacific Ocean. The identification of a blocking situation allows forecasts, within the blocking region and somewhat to the east, to be extended. This may be very important for brazilian agriculture..
